Greek Life and Religion
This thread is not to be used to begin a debate! It is simply a way for me to share an idea with those who might have conflicting feelings about joining a fraternity or sorority because of religious issues.
Has anyone in this position every considered joining a Christian-center or religion-centered fraternity/sorority? If there isn't one on your campus, have you thought about chartering a chapter or starting a new organization? I did a search on Yahoo and found several across the country. I know my college campus had one. Just a thought. :) |
Yes, before I heard of Alpha Phi Omega, I considered joining Sigma Theta Epsilon Christian Service Fraternity. Myself and some friends was trying to restart the Kent State University chapter, but it never came to fruition.
AKAtude, I have a serious related question to your inquiry that has me a little confused: If many of the traditional GLO was founded on Christian principles, what is it that separates the Christian-centered GLOs from the Christian-principle founded GLOs. I ask this b/c the two types of orgs tend to segregate themselves and not work together for the good of God. I am genuinely curious. RM |
Good question.
IMHO, I think it has more to do with individual idealogy than anything else. There may be certain aspects of the "Christian-principled" GLO that don't set well with some people. Therefore, they reject the organization. |
yes...i did look into sororities with a "religious" spin...some appealed...some didn't...and i did seriously consider starting my own and/or chartering one of the sororities i looked into on my campus...but it was kind of late in my academic progression...so i decided to nix the whole idea of founding/chartering all together to consider other options that would better fullfill my individual spiritual and social needs...

Hey
Are there any Muslim or Jewish based org's?
Just curious. |
I have considered joining or starting a Christian organization at my school. I contacted the headquarters in regards to one and it would take up to 3 years for the chapter to be chartered and God willing I would have graduated by then. However, myself and 7 other ladies are beginning a chapter of International Eastern Stars very shortly in Chattanooga, TN. If anyone lives in that vicinity and is interested, please feel free to email me or send me a PM.

I think I have answered my own question...
Quote:
1. Christian GLOs names and coats of arms are public knowledge and have a Biblical basis in symbolism. 2. Christian GLOs are founded on a Biblical scripture(s) 3. Christian GLOs tend to be more open about aspects of their organizations that other organizations tend to keep secret. 4. Christian GLOs central focus is Jesus Christ and their works is to primarily glorify Him. Examples of the above include the following orgs: Kappa Upsilon Chi Fraternity (Keeping Under Christ)--Founding scripture: Proverbs 27:17--"Iron sharpeneth iron, so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend" Beta Upsilon Chi Fraternity (Brothers Under Christ)--Founding scripture: Psalm 133:1--"Behold how good and pleasant is is for brothers to dwell together in unity" Alpha Nu Omega Fraternity & Sorority *two separate organizations* Founding scripture: Revelations 1:8--"I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty" Alpha Gamma Omega Fraternity--Founding scripture: 2 Timothy 2:15--"Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing th word of truth" Sigma Theta Epsilon Fraternity (Sunergoi Theou Esman *Fellow Workers with God*) Founding scripture: 1 Cor 3:9 "For we are laborers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building" Beta Kappa Lambda Fraternity (Brothers Keeper For Life) Founding scripture: Gen 4:9 "And the Lord said unto Cain 'Where is Abel thy brother?' And Abel said, 'I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?'" Sigma Phi Chi Sorority (Sisters For Christ) Founding scripture: Matthew 6:28 "And why take ye thought for rainment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin" Just some food for thought;) RM |
Greetings,
Elogeme Adolphi is also a Christian Sorority and is founded on some of those same principles. |
