July 9, 2009 http://www.examiner.com/x-4839-Phila...Phi-Beta-Sigma President Bill Clinton set to join Phi Beta Sigma by Daniel Shine - Philadelphia Hip-Hop Music Examiner The men of Phi Beta Sigma are hosting their National Conclave this week in New Orleans, Louisiana. According to sources in New Orleans yesterday the men of this brotherhood voted on several members to be inducted into the fraternity at a later date. One of those men is former President Bill Clinton and the other is Rev. Al Sharpton. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity has not confirmed this information as of yet but sources in New Orleans who wish to remain anonymous have confirmed that this order of business has been voted on and both men will be inducted later this year. Similarly last year it was said that Michelle Obama would be initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, the country's first and oldest black greek lettered sorority. No official word was ever made public as to wether or not First Lady Michelle Obama ever became a member of the organization. If Bill Clinton is inducted into Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. he will be the first former President of the United States to become a member of a historically black greek lettered organization. Congratulations to former President Bill Clinton and the brotherhood of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The founders, Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service. UPDATE: It has been confirmed that former President Bill Clinton, activist Rev. Al Sharpton and iconic entertainer Stevie Wonder have all been approved by the members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc to be inducted as honorary members of this illustrious fraternity. |

Al Sharpton, really?

I know bestowing honorary memberships is mostly (although I can think of a few historically white GLO's that do it) a BGLO thing. But why? Historically white GLO's tend to claim famous people because of the belief that the famous person's time as a member of our GLO was instrumental in creating who they are. What say you? (and I'm sure, sure, sure that we've already discussed this before)

My mistake. I dont USUALLY check other forums other than my own GLO's. |

I say: http://www.aka1908.org/ :) Also, for the BGLOs that do grant honorary membership, most of the time it is to people who don't have the name recognition of a Michelle Obama or Bill Clinton. It is just because these folks have big names that the mainstream press gives the story any attention. That's a roundabout way of saying that we don't grant honorary membership just to "famous" folks or to folks because they are famous. |

Clinton was already an honorary Sigma before he got elected
Bill Clinton first told people that he was an honorary member of Phi Beta Sigma on Arsenio Hall before he was elected president. It's not a new story. Bill Clinton is also Skull and Bones. That's what really got him in the White House.

Clinton went to Yale Law, but Skull & Bones is a society exclusively for Yale undergraduates, so he was not a member.
