Paul Quinn College loses accreditation

Dallas Morning News:

Paul Quinn College, a historically black school in southern Dallas, is losing its accreditation because of financial and other problems, officials said today.

It's a devastating blow that threatens the future of the tiny liberal arts college.

“They didn’t have enough money. They were in debt. Their planning and assessment and development of student learning outcomes were deemed not up to par,” said Belle Wheelan, president of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Houston Chronicle:

DALLAS — Officials say Paul Quinn College, a small historically black college in Dallas, is losing its accreditation.

Belle Wheelan, president of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, cited the private liberal arts school's debt, a lack of funding, planning, assessment and student learning outcomes.

Colleges can't award diplomas without accreditation in Texas and an unaccredited school's students can't receive federal or state financial aid.

I feel sorry for the students. I live in Atlanta and Morris brown is still struggling.

This is really a sad state for the HBCU's that are smaller and don't have the financial backing such as the more popular schools like Spelman, Morehouse, Fisk, Howard..etc.

Does this make transferring out impossible?

It might make it hard, but it's probably still possible. It makes sense to do it sooner rather than later in case you lose most of your credits.

That's a shame. I would hate to be a junior or senior and hear this news

I'm not gonna lie, when I saw this I thought, they're still accredited?
It's kind like when you hear a really old person whom you thought was already dead has passed away... Sad but you've already made your peace.

I know a few Greeks from PQ, and whenever I spoke with them, it didn't seem like there was any trouble on the horizon. I kind of knew, though, that something like this would be happening. It's sad.

What's the chance of them ever getting their accreditation back?

knight_shadow 07-09-2009 10:22 PM

I don't see it happening.
