New policy

Hello all!
This is my very first time posting on Greek chat! This is so exciting to be able to keep in contact with all my Zeta ladies! I am writing this in regard to my Alpha Psi chapters new alcohol policy. Much to my dismay, there is now no drinking for anyone under the age of 21 at a Zeta function. This has changed greatly from last years drunk fests. I just am wondering what you all are doing at you chapters around the nation. I just want to know if Alpha Psi is alone in this, or if other ZTA's are doing it too. Also, I was wondering where our biggest most successful chapter is. Alpha Psi is about 170 girls, but that is small for our campus. Where are the top houses for Zeta located? Thanks a lot.

Hi and welcome to Greek Chat!
Every Zeta chapter has taken up this policy. It's to make Zeta less liable in case something happens to an underage drinker. So much has changed since I first joined. My freshman year we were still allowed to have socials at the fraternity houses with alchohol. In a way, it was safer because nobody would have to drive home after; we would just walk back to the Zeta house. But, at the same time, underage drinking took place. I don't mind so much since I'll be 21 in a few months!!!

a third party vendor has to be the one checking IDs and serving any aclohol also if I'm geting this right. So, my chapter couldn't go to let's say a mixer with a Fraternity from a neighboring school or even on our own campus if it's only brothers IDing and serving. that is if we are formally invited as Zeta and attend as Zeta. It's all about who ends up being liable if something bad should happen at or after the party...

Yeah, I think all Zeta chapters have this policy (or at least they are supposed to). So those of us who are under just pre-party at someone's apartment, or the fraternity we are mixing with will throw one unofficially. It does kinda stink, but it saves the sorority a lot of (possible) trouble, and when you finally CAN drink at the functions, it's really exciting. I turn 21 in March, and the first function I can drink at will be Crown Ball, so it'll almost be like having a second b-day party!

I think most schools have taken up a policy similar to Zeta's. UCF has gone dry so we don't have to worry about being the only sorority that cannot have these socials that involve alcohol being served to underage drinkers. We use have socials at the fraternities houses all the time. I honestly think that those were probably my favorite socials. At the end of my freshman year, UCF adapted the policy. Now, all of our socials that involve alcohol must be taken off-campus. It's much more expensive this way because you have to rent buses and all the other stuff. But, it keeps the university and the sororities/fraternities out of trouble. Plus, my 21st is in February anyways. ;)

the two of you stink...I don't turn 21 till finals week next semester...way after our formal, etc :( Hopefully tho I find seniors who don't wanna study and will go out with me...

do any of ya know the difference between honoring and enforcing when it comes to this policy...seems that most of the greeks on my campus have the policy but one just has to honor it..know what I mean? like, it isn't their national policy yet but it will be soon? (did I just answer my own question??!! )

I think you did answer your own question. :) Most of the sororities on my campus have nationals that enforce this policy. On the other hand, the fraternities do not. Because the school requires that any social involving alcohol must be taken off-campus, the fraternities "honor" the policy.

It's local law

This policy is nothing new. This policy has been in effect since the national legal age to drink was raised to 21 almost twenty years ago. It is illegal to offer alcohol to persons under the age of 21 in the United States of America.

Ladies, As an Alum of our wonderful sisterhood and an officer of the law I would have to agree with the policy. However, I do remember as a Freshman and Sophomore Have that rule as well. I can however go one better for you. Two months after I turned 21 our college changed rush to be two weeks after school started instead of the week before school. During this time we were not allowed to go to the local bars, visit Frat houses or drink period. Needless to say it was a long two weeks esp since my boyfriend's frat held the largest and best welcome back party at the beging of the year.

If any of you deside to drink (:D) Feel free but always remember the crown that you wear apon your head and represent your chapters well. This coming from an experanced goof up!

I don't believe anybody answered the other question: what's our biggest chapter? I know I'm curious to hear that because my chapter is small also (about 45 I think).

UCF chapter did have 180. I'm not sure what we're at right now (after the seniors leaving). I would imagine that UF and FSU would have a lot more than UCF.
