Some CA kids must take summer school because of error

I thought this story was interesting! Apparently because of a schedule issue which cut 5 minutes out of school on Fridays, the two schools have to make up 34 days of school this summer!

This would suck for parents, students, and the teachers!

Any thoughts?

I love how they have to make it up because of someone ELSE'S mistake.

It sucks, but it has to be done I suppose. That's alot of funding to lose.

This is dumb. If 5 minutes makes that big of a difference then the curriculum sucks.

The administration needs to attend summer school. Not the kids.

YES.

Well, will they really have to attend?

The district will have to hold the classes maybe, but what would happen if the kids just didn't go?

They wouldn't have a class count day scheduled like during the regular year, right?

Oh man, this sounds like something that would happen in Florida.

I guess California is headed that way pretty quickly as well...so much for the move to SF.:(

Okay, I haven't had my coffee yet this morning, so forgive me... wouldn't there be other contractual issues at hand besides these extra minutes. If the teachers are having to prep extra time and teach extra time, will they get extra pay? and how much will all this extra payroll (because it's not just teachers) cost? And how will that affect the janetorial schedule for cleaning the schools? I could go on, but I'm sure you all get what I'm trying to say.

I didn't read the article, but didn't Calif. ditch summer school this year because the state couldn't afford to pay the teachers?

I was just thinking the same thing. My district got rid of summer school (different state) for the exact same reason.

AOII_LB93 06-22-2009 01:24 PM

California as a whole didn't ditch summer school...certain districts did for certain levels. LAUSD (a HOT MESS of a district) cut summer school for elementary, middle and non remedial/grad high school. Mine did the same. Normally we offer 60 "sections" of classes, but it was cut down to 30 and limited to remediation or make-up classes for kids who didn't graduate this year and special ed.

It sucks because a lot of teachers depend on summer school, but not me.

As far as those schools and what they did, what a bunch of dumb admins. Didn't anyone do the math before they did that? Idiots.
