WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A lone gunman wounded a security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday before being injured by return fire, according to police and a museum statement.

The suspect was identified as James von Brunn (wow!), an 88-year-old white supremacist from Maryland, two law enforcement officials told CNN.

Gunfire at the entrance of the museum wounded at least two people Wednesday, emergency officials said.

A private security guard and the shooting suspect were wounded, according to officials of the Washington police.

Sgt. David Schlosser, a spokesman for U.S. Park Police, told reporters a man armed with a "long gun" entered the museum at 12:50 p.m. and fired at a security officer, and both were wounded in the exchange of gunfire.

"My understanding is that two other security officers at the museum returned gunfire at the man that had entered the museum," Schlosser said. Watch Schlosser tell what's known so far »

Schlosser said he didn't know exactly what kind of firearm the man had and whether the shooting was before or after he passed through a metal detector.

I work at the local Jewish/Holocaust Museum...our campus is obviously in shock right now, as well as being on heightened alert.

Just looked at some of the links..he was Greek in college. Oy...

I just read the Yahoo article on it- they just said he was elderly, not 88!

I read that one too. I thought he was like late 60s or 70s. Not nearly 90!

He's been expressing his hatred for much of his life. He has been very active in white supremacist groups for a while. He's notorious.

As far as this incident is concerned, it is suspected that this was a last ditch effort from an old man who thinks America's going to hell in a handbasket. White supremacist groups have tried to get stronger in the past decade and especially since this past election.

Maybe it was one of those "suicide by cop" scenarios? He was trying to prove a point and die in the process - go down in flames. Except it didn't work.

From what I've read and seen online, he's been expressing it for a long time. He served Federal prison time for an attempted attack on the Federal reserve, and he made several racist and anti-semitic statements about those who convicted them. He's also written some kind of hate book, too.

I'm actually an intern at the museum and today happens to be my day off. It's terrifying...and really sad that there is still such hatred out here.

When we went to the museum back in 1997, there was a bomb threat and we had to evacuate.

I guess the FBI was right when they predicted that right-wing extremism would increase. Between the election, the declining economy, and the increasing legalization of gay marriage, their heads are just exploding, I'm sure.

Update: One of the security guards is dead.

Yeesh... I also saw that he was president of his fraternity. Perhaps we should leave out which frat it is... Not the best alum. As a Jewish girl living about two miles from the Holocaust Museum, I'm stunned and angry. I'm so sad about the guard, but more than sad, I'm angry.
