MODEL PROGRAM

(Mentors Opening Doors Enriching Lives)

Children's Home Society’s MODEL is a one-to-one community-based mentoring program for children who have a parent incarcerated in a state or federal prison.

WHO: Children age 4-17 years who have a parent who is incarcerated in a state or federal prison or a local jail.

WHAT: One-to-one activities between a caring, responsible adult and a child that will focus on building a positive and supportive relationship, developing life skills, and increasing the child’s ability to interact with people from different backgrounds.

WHEN: The visits will be a minimum of 1 hour a week and will be regularly scheduled at a time agreed upon between the mentor, the child, and the caretaking family. We ask for a commitment of 1 year.

WHERE: All activities should take place in the local community. Some sample activities include:

* Campus events
* Shooting hoops
* Homework at the library
* Watching a game
* Riding bikes
* Going out to dinner
* Visiting a museum or an art exhibit

WHY: Children involved in mentoring programs show increased academic performance, improved family and peer relationships, better social skills, and are less likely to use drugs or alcohol.
