Kommunity Service

Brethren,

I was sitting in klass attempting to kome up with ideas that would inspire service in the publik interest in my community. I was hoping a few of you could shoot me some ideas of service events that you or your khapters have done in the past.

YO NUPE,

Kommunity service has to be tailored specifikally to the area and its needs. In undergrad, my skool was right in the heart of the hood and a part of what was sour in the kommunity was no akkess to healthkare. We partnered with lokal agenkies to provide free skreenings, immunization, etk. This is just a small part of the things we did as a khapter in addition to Guide Right and KL.

Thanks Phi.

I understand what you are saying, its just that Gainesville is a tiny village here in Florida, we've done lots of service here, some of it was featured in the journal a while back. I think that the health kare idea kould work here as well. You've got the ball rollin' now. My goal is to get people to list more service ideas so that maybe I'll spot something that we haven't done here before and that seems feasible.

Next time something happens in the kommunity bad, found out a way to get involved in fixing the problem. We did a march for a young girl who was murdered out here and I'd say we inspired service.

That or a good old fashion can food drive or bowl-a-thon.

Adopting a highway would be great, because it's something your chapter can keep renewing over and over. We adopted Route 42E in Wilberforce, OH. and it's been that way for the past 18 years. It's good because folks will see "Adopt a Highway Kappa Alpha Psi." You just have to make sure you keep renewing it.

^^^ I like the idea of the Adopt-A-Highway. Its definitely a good visual for the Kommunity and something that members of the khapter kan take pride in seeing everytime they drive by.

We're working on getting a highway too.

Now, Just because it Kommunity Service doesn't mean the chapter can't make a dollar.

Throw a party, sell tickets for $10, half off if they bring school supplies for the youth. With some promoting, large enough spot, and your chapter's rep, it should turn out to be a great event for y'all and the kids in need.

I'm not gonna lie, due to ppppppp, we had a horrible event. Didn't work out for chapter or our scholarship fund. Long story short, our next event needs to be huge.

Examples of community service projects include:
  • Cleaning a park.
  • Collecting items for charity such as clothes, food, or furniture.
  • Cleaning roadside verges.
  • Helping the elderly in nursing homes.
  • Helping the local fire or police service.
  • Helping out at a local library.
  • Tutoring children with learning disabilities.
  • Participating in school activities that benefit the wider community.
These three that are bolded are always of good merit. The need within the three, if met by any organization, can impart so much positive acclaim to them as a whole.

KAN I suggest finding an after school program (i.e. Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, etc.) and working to tutor kids for a few hours a week. My KL boys did this and the kids loved them!!!

Also, it's about to be Valentine's Day. Get on the phone with every business in your city. Get FREE stuff to raffle off and donate the proceeds to a local charity. It took me two days of phone calls out of the phonebook to come up with over $1000 worth of stuff. Free hotel rooms, massages, facials, manicures and pedicures, movie tickets, free dinners for two, etc. We raffled tickets for $2 a piece, or 6 for $10. We split all the packages up into first, second, and third place packages! Worked great!

Good luck! YO!
