Locals Rule!

:D
Greetings All....I'm new to GC. I and a couple of other women are currently in the works of founding a new local DELTA KAPPA SIGMA. Being that none of us went through a "process" we have a ton of work to do and we could use some help from established sororities like yourselves :) We went to the local sites and the basic things to become a local sorority, however once all of those basics such as purpose, motto, mascots, etc. are chosen what is left to do? Or is that just it. Don't get me wrong, I realize that a lot of the traditions and history is up to my founding sisters and like I said we have a TON  of work ahead of us, I'm just looking for some helpful advice and tips!!!

Please email me at liberation80@hotmail.com

Thanx so much

Liberation-
Congrats on starting your local!!! :D :D :D :D

One piece of advice that I think is VERY important is to make sure you create a constitution and by-laws for your sorority.
You need to lay your foundation (and the rules) down, so that when differences in opinion come up in your sorority (and they will) you can look to your guidelines for the answer.
Have the founding members (and all your current memebers if you like) get together and create these by-laws and your constitution. It is a great reference tool for now and decades later when sisters need to look to it for advice.

Also, record as much as you can about the founding of your chapter, you members, how you came about creatig your sorority, what you represent, the events you hold, the things you went through, etc. THIS IS SSOO IMPORTANT!! My local sorority is 100 years old and history is SSOO important to have to see how everything was once done and how your sorority has grown! You never know how long your local will be there for!

I hope this helps you and good luck!! Keep posting to keep us updated!!!!

What I think

This goes out to all of the new Local Frat and Soror's out there, and I would like to say congrads and keep up the good work. One good advice that I can give you and it might come upon one of your founding members, is to stay with each other and yes there may be times where you feel things are not going the way you want them to be so begin to use Robert Rules of Order that's something that you might want to use if you haven't use it already and it comes in handy. Also you want to make sure that you find a advisor or someone who knows a bit about greek life, and can help you with the things that you may need help with. My fraternity is about 5 months old founded feb 15, 2001 and it was a struggle but we made it through, our counsitution was right, motto, vision, and so on was together. So think creative find out what's your purpose, and make sure that the people that's being apart of this new history has there life together and ready for business. Now that i'm a alumni my brothers are still there and our first class is coming soon in Jan. I'm still around to help and it's been fun doing all that we have done. So i hope what i wrote helps you and if you need any help setting up your consitution let me know i will love to help.

That is a cool sorority name Liberation. The reason I say that is because my sorority (which is local) is called Kappa Delta Sigma! :) I wish you the best of luck. We are trying to go national at the moment are doing very well, so we won't be Kappa Delta Sigma very much longer but felt the urge to share. :)
