de-pledging

Hi, I'm currently in the plege period as a Kappa Kappa Gamma at the University of Iowa. We are about ready to iniciate. I'm thinking about transfering schools at semester, and there is not Kappa chapter where I'm looking. If I iniciate with Kappa here, would I be able to join a sorority where I transfered?? Should I not iniciate until I'm sure I want to stay here??
Thanks!

AGDLynn 10-02-2001 06:56 PM

Someone more experienced will probably give you a better answer later, but here's a quick one that I hope is accurate, lol.

If you are initiated into a NPC, you can never be initiated into another NPC group. There may also be limitations because you are an official pledge.

Stay tuned for more info, lol!!:)

AlphaGam1019 10-02-2001 06:59 PM

AGDLynn is correct- once you are initated into one NPC group, you can not join another.

However, if you depledge a sorority, you may pledge another sorority a year from when you depledge.

In other words, once an initiated Kappa, always a Kappa!I encourage you to stay in that wonderful group unless you out-and-out know that you'll definitely be transferring to a school with no Kappas and that you want to be an active Greek.

However..you have no guarantee of getting into a sorority at your new school, especially if you're an upperclassmen. At some schools it won't matter, at some it definitely wil.

CutiePie2000 10-02-2001 07:06 PM

carnation gives excellent advice...

Once you are initiated into KKG (an NPC sorority) you are ineligible to be initiated into another NPC group....

http://www.npcwomen.org/policies/sel...agreements.htm
III. The Panhellenic Compact (Excerpted statements of membership eligibility)
A woman who is or who has ever been an initiated member of an existing NPC fraternity shall not be eligible for membership in another NPC fraternity.

If you were to quit Kappa now, as an uninitiated person, when you switched schools, you would be released from Kappa as a Pledge immediately, as you would be at a different campus. However, as carnation so wisely points out, there is no guarantess that you will get into a sorority there, or get the one you want (or maybe you won't like the girls as much....it could happen). Only you know what to do in your situation, but Kappa Kappa Gamma is an excellent fraternity, with chapters everywhere. Even though your new campus might not have a collegiate KKG chapter, there might be alums in your city....please give this matter your deepest consideration.

Noyce,
I'm a DZ at Iowa and I can tell you that if you do initiate, you will always be a Kappa, regardless if your new school has kappa or not. I know many Kappa's here at Iowa, so I hope this doesn't have anything to do with them - and if it doesn't, wouldn't you always want to be able to call them sister? if you need anymore questions answered, email me at IowaDZ@greekchat.com

Once you're initiated, you can't join another NPC sorority. But there's nothing preventing you from joining another group (other than a social sorority) on your new campus - say, a service sorority/fraternity.

As carnation pointed out, you may not get into a sorority if you depledge and rush at your new school - or you may not like the sororities that are there.

It's your choice - but if I were in your shoes, I'd rather be an alum than be potentially left out of the Greek system entirely. :)

Ladies, a bit of clarification......

If you quit as a pledge (i.e. never initiated), and STAY AT THE SAME CAMPUS, then you must wait a year.

If you quit as a pledge, (i.e. never initiated) and TRANSFER TO A DIFFERENT SCHOOL, then you are released immediately from your pledge contract at Kappa Kappa Gamma at your old school and are eligible and able to pledge a new group right away, as you are at a different campus, different Panhellenic.

I am with AEPhialum myself....

Exactly...a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush!

Something else to consider

Noyce,

I am assuming you are a first semester freshman. Before you depledge in hopes of getting into another group, you may want to check out the Greek system at your new school. At some schools with very competitive systems, being anything other than a first semester freshman can put you at a disadvantage. What school are you thinking of transferring to? That might help us out.

I know a lot of people are saying "once you are initiated you will always be a sister," but ladies, keep in mind the POV of someone who would get initiated, transfer, and then be on the outside looking in for 3 years. Yes Kappa is a wonderful group, but I'm sorry, that would suck. Especially if the campus is one with a lot of Greek involvement.

At any rate transfer to the school that has the best academic programs for you. That is the main thing you are in school for.

Life is full of tough decisions.....

I agree with what you are saying, which is what makes this decision difficult for this young lady.

A) On one hand, if she gets initiated into Kappa, when she gets to School #2, she could be on the outside of the Greek system looking in. I agree, this would "suck" somewhat.

B) On the other hand, if she leaves Kappa and is not initiated, she might not get a sorority at School #2 either. So she could end up on the outside looking in as well
(and not have the benefits of Greek Life as an alumna of Kappa Kappa Gamma either, which would suck even more than scenario A).

C) She depledges Kappa, swtiches schools, rushes again, gets into a sorority that she likes. The End. She enjoys a blissful 3 years in her new sorority. It could happen.

It depends on whether you are willing to take that gamble or not, and it is hard to gauge this situation, not knowing which university that School #2 is, and how competitive their Rush is.

Also, at School #2, some people might be all uptight, and not like it if they knew that you were, at one time, a pledge of Kappa Kappa Gamma...it might seem to them like you can cast aside your membership in an sorority at a moment's notice.

That is not the case, but I am just trying to think of all of the worst possible case scenarios. It would be irresponsible of us to assume a Pollyana attitude and assume that everything would work out peachy, when it might not....know what I mean?

Good luck to you...you have a tough decision to make ahead of you. Please tell us what you end up doing! :)

IowaHawkeye 10-02-2001 11:39 PM

I guess a key to your decision may lie in where you want to transfer to. Iowa has a good Greek system, but in no way do you have to be Greek to e involved on campus or have fun. If you're thinking of transfering to a school that has a very active Greek systemand would feel lft out not being a par of it, hat may factor into your decision.

Beryana 10-02-2001 11:49 PM

Once again, this thought hinges completely on what school and what the greek system is like (and people may not like it, but its does happen). Even if you are initiated into an NPC sorority, you can still join a local sorority if you want to continue to be involved in greek life and there are locals on campus. I'm not saying that one is better than the other or that it still would not be a tough decision, but it is still a possibility.

AlphaChiS2K 10-03-2001 10:53 AM

Wait another semester... you just may find that what you've been missing all along at your current school (i.e. the reasons you are thinking about transferring) can be found in your new sisterhood with KKG. You can usually transfer up until you are a junior, which should leave you some time... Let Kappa Kappa Gamma have the chance to try and keep you!

stillwater15 10-03-2001 02:06 PM

why are you in the process of being initiated into some organization and be thinking about joining another organization? that doesn't make any sense to me.
