What's the big deal???
 

OK...I posted this in Risk Management but I figured I would get a bigger response here. So here is my question:

**What is the big deal about a sorority/fraternity being or going dry?**

I've seen so many posts debating the pros and cons of dry greek organizations. I was just wondering why that is such a big deal. I know that from my personal Greek experience...my sorority is dry. We have a ZERO TOLERANCE for any alcohol consumption at sorority events. I personally don't mind that. I feel that I am able to have a great time with my sisters and fellow greeks without the alcohol. Don't get me wrong...I do my share of drinking, just not when I'm representing my sorority or have any sorority paraphenalia on me.

Anyways, I'm not trying to start a huge debate or to upset anyone. I was just wondering why everyone makes such a big deal about being dry.

I know what you're talking about. In my sorority... it's like everybody has to drink- or else they won't be cool (or something like that).

I really don't like having to drink all of the time, but a couple (like two) of my sority sisters feel the same way as me about this issue. We hang out together so we won't be pushed to drink like everybody else.

The alcohol issue is upsetting at times, but I like being part of a big group on campus- whether we feel the same way about drinking or not... it's worth it.

That is a good question . . . so lets change the emphasis. IF its no big deal why is everyone and their uncle pressurung Greeks to go dry?

Its obviously a big deal to someone. And most people are at least somewhat unhappy about giving up something they are normally allowed to do.

Especially when you tell them that by joining a Greek organization they have to give up certain rights.

I don't think going Greek means giving up certain rights, what it means is that you have become part of large organization and it is time to do your part to make sure the organization will be there for future generations.
The whole drinking issue is being blown out of porportion. Sororities have been "dry" forever and have not had a problem. This new NPC resolution just says no drinking at your houses to insure liability problems will not come up. If your organization is going dry it is not to hurt your social life but to insure the saftey of your members. I know schools are different and some do not have the luxury of third party vendors, but we need to find alternatives and move on. I would rather skip a few parties than lose a sister or my chapter beacuse of someone elses ignorance.
