THE NFL DRAFT

Let's talk about our team's picks, who made the best picks, the worst picks and who got over or robbed via trades.

AGDee 04-26-2009 09:31 AM

Well, we got Stafford from GA as the first pick, first round. Will it help the Lions win a game? That will remain to be seen!

AGDLynn 04-26-2009 09:54 AM

GOOOO DAWGS!!!

Woof Woof

Yea for Knowshoon and M. Massaquoi:D

Falcons got who????

AGDee 04-26-2009 09:56 AM

On the plus side, Stafford doesn't have to do much to become a superstar here. He just has to win a game. One game.

I'm not sold on Stafford based on his college play; if I were the Lions I would have gone Jason Smith.

The Hayward-Bey pick by the Raiders was a ridiculous reach, but because of Al Davis' history (i.e. wanting the fastest guys and best athletes), it wasn't a huge surprise.

I figured the Giants (my favorite team) would pick a receiver, especially after they picked up a starting linebacker in the off-season.

But did you see the look on Heywood Bey's face when he was selected ?

"Noooo...not the Raiders!! NNOOOOOOooooo...."

The rumor is that when the Raiders announced their pick, someone at the Crabtree table got all excited.

Bey's expression looked more like shock to me; I mean, if everyone was telling me that I was a late 1st round pick, and someone grabbed me in the top 10, I'd be surprised too. That's a lot more guaranteed money that will be winding up on your paycheck.

Tru dat...I also heard that a bet was lost, thus the 'giddiness' at Crabtree's table.

A lost of analysts are still scratching their heads at the Raiders pick and I think that if his hands gets better catching wise, HB may actually turn into a good pick for the Raiders.

Mark my words on this...I dunno why but I think Crabtree may be the 'next T.O.' personality-wise...he has that 'look' about him.

Get back to me in 2 years on that.

What did you think about the Jets grabbing Sanchez?

Crabtree hasn't had any issues though, at least any that were publicized. Plus his college coach (Mike Leach) has had nothing but good things to say about his work ethic and everything else.

A big thing with Bey (no pun intended) is that he really wasn't all that productive in college. If he goes from being an average college receiver to an outstanding NFL guy, good for him. The odds are against him though, more so than with Crabtree or even Maclin (despite his trouble running routes).

The Sanchez deal wasn't a bad one in that they didn't give up a whole lot to get him. I think Clements could be a decent quarterback and would like to see him get a shot somewhere, even if it's not with the Jets.

he wasn't not productive, IMO. he had decent yards, and receptions. there are recievers that had fewer of both and got picked higher. is maryland a prostyle offense? i don't know, but i think if we look at TTU and the style they play i don't think that it's unfathomable to understand why crabtree had a billion catches.

Well yeah, the style plays into it too. Plus, there's the issue that Crabtree didn't really have to run many routes in college, so he'll have to adapt to that in the NFL.

There's no guarantee Crabtree is any better than Bey or Maclin or any of the other wideouts, and it's not like he's a slam dunk like Larry Fitzgerald (or even Calvin Johnson) but he at least has a step up on the other guys. Football Outsiders mentioned something about Crabtree catching 94% of the passes that were thrown his way last year. That's a ridiculously high number; looking at that you can figure that he has good hands and can run, and that's a good start towards being a productive NFL receiver.

ETA: I'm not saying Bey will be a failure in the NFL, or even that he was a bad college receiver. Picking him in the top 10 just seems like a bit of a reach.
