white dress for initation/preference
I found this in the bridal section, but it's "casual" enough that it may be appropriate for some chapter preference of initiation:
ahhh, crap, I just realized it was plus size only.... Well, if any of you run across any cute ones, you may post links here for people to check out... |

Wow, I wish I had bought my white dress in the spring last year! Anyone who is going through recruitment this fall should buy a white dress now just in case. Running around in November trying to find one is terrible...

I don't know how strict other chapters are, but this would work for my chapter- anyone who had to have sleeves could put a lightweight cardigan over it! http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do...scid=585665002 http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do...scid=585679022 http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do...scid=585662022 |
J. Crew's Little Black Dress Collection is great for Preference dresses (for active sorority members whose chapters wear black).
Most of them are also sold in white (for New Members): http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/Wedd...blackdress.jsp Cardigans can always be added if sleeves are necessary. |

I think it's important to mention before we get into more pages here that standards for white dresses vary from organization to organization and even chapter to chapter, so before buying any of these, actives and new members should check to make sure that a dress meets the qualifications for THEIR OWN chapter before buying. :)
I've seen girls buy white dresses that were totally inappropriate for our purposes before and get burned when ritual either made them get a different dress or turned them away from whatever we were doing. |

Very true. Some advice for New Members: *Be sure to ask your New Member Educator what the SPECIFIC guidelines are for Ritual attire. Ask: Is it okay to wear something strapless? If so, do I need to buy a cardigan? What is the appropriate length? Is off-white allowed? How long/short are dresses allowed to be? *If you purchase something, make sure you show it to your Ritual Chair or someone in charge to make sure it is appropriate. Don't assume that because it's white, it's okay for ritual. *Also, be sure to keep the receipt or leave the tags on it just in case it is deemed inappropriate has to be returned. *Don't wait until like the week before to try and find something. You want to make sure you have enough time. |
lol, KSU Violet, did you find it ironic that in the description for the Maggy London dress (2nd Dillard's link that you posted) it says "Add a little Grecian flair to your wardrobe"?

A couple from eDressMe: http://www.edressme.com/c2226.html http://www.edressme.com/c3343.html From White House/Black Market: (Note: Some chapters may require you to wear a sweater or something over strapless dresses) http://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com...&maxPg=5&size= http://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com...&maxPg=1&size= |
I just purchased http://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com...&maxPg=5&size= this dress for a different occasion. Would it be appropriate to wear for someone going through recruitment? Of course, I will ensure that everything I wear fits my school's dress code/ attire guidelines for each night, but should wearing white be avoided since a chapter's sisters may all be wearing white?

It does look a little too "bride-ey" for rush though, not to mention you might not want to go with strapless and worry about pulling it up all night. (Not to mention those fug black shoes with it, but that's obviously the fault of the stylist for the ad.) Also, all white really isn't flattering on most people unless they are superduper skinny and the perfect shade of tanned. |
