Southern Methodist: No Parties Until November for SAE; Fine Also Imposed
Southern Methodist’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon has been fined $5,000 and cannot hold parties until November 2009, according to the Dallas Morning News:
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont....affb206b.html The penalties are related to a student's death approxiately two years ago. The campus paper is also covering the story: http://media.www.smudailycampus.com/...-3699802.shtml Edited to add: And the February 2009 Texas Monthly story is apparently accessible, although not especially kind to Southern Methodist (among others): http://www.texasmonthly.com/2009-02-01/feature2.php |
Wow. That'll show em.

[I] < terrible attempt at a "Texas accent" : > Why banditone, are you . . . gasp . . . suggestin' that $5,000 isn't what it used to be? Or that $5,000 never really was much to a lot of SMU students and their dads and moms? Or that a group might get downright creative at throwin' parties even when somebody said, "Y'all can't do that for a few months, hear?" Just askin' |
exlurker - my thoughts exactly - except I'd do it in a Chicago/midwest accent because back when I was there, about 50% of the school was from the Lakeshore or St. Louis ;)
Also, the Texans that are there don't really have accents, they're much more cosmopolitan than that, Darling!! haha |
Speak for yourself, srmom! I have a (mild) Texas accent despite my growing up in Dallas! :) Then again, I'm not so cosmopolitan!!! :) I can't remember -- are you from TX or did you immigrate to go to SMU?
To be honest, I think SMU felt a lawsuit coming on. The increased media attention about this incident obviously had something to do with this. Isolated incident or not, something should have been done two years ago! It doesn't seem quite relevant now. I am hopeful, however, that Jake's parents may get some closure from SMU's inadequate investigation. I'm VERY glad SAE didn't get kicked off campus; very few of the guys were a part of the chapter when this happened, and those guys are about to graduate. I knew some great SAEs in 2006, but since Jake's death, SAE has done a lot to turn their reputation around. They've gotten some really outstanding guys. |
If they had left, there would've been nothing left of fraternity life at SMU...
Maybe Phi Delt |
Yes, Phi Delt is a good house at SMU (at least they were in my day)
I immigrated from Houston, but I lived in NJ for a few years in my youth, and even though my parents were both born and raised in Houston, they both were educated in the north - so I don't have much of an accent. But, what I have tends to get thicker the more Chardonnay I consume :) I agree with all that you said, the guys that are paying for the mistakes made then are innocent. Unfortunately, that is sometimes the way things go. They are a strong chapter and will no doubt remain so. |

They shouldn't be fined in the first place. It wasn't the fraternity's fault. |
