Watchmen Spoiler Thread
Definately need a different thread for this:
What did you think the endgame was? Who was the sanest character and was there an actual good guy in the movie? |
although I dislike the movie (intensely), I think the "good guy" (and i'd even call him the sanest, although they didn't in the movie) was Rorshak (sp?).
He was the only one willing to stand up to John & the other dude, and tell the truth. Plus he really was the only one who was actively pursuing the killer of The Comedian. |

That's why I loved the Graphic Novel, it'll a metter of perspective and there is no true good guy and bad guy, only human beings. |
TRUE SPOILER WARNING: Some of what I am about to say here gives away the ending. DO NOT READ if you haven't seen the movie!!!
The endgame IMO was this... The Comedian, Veidt and Dr. Manhattan had all reached a point where they considered human life as merely a speck in the universe. Think about what Dr. M told Lorie on Mars. If all human life ceased to be on the planet, the rest of the universe wouldn't notice. (Hmm makes for a good riddle: If the Earth blew up in the middle of the universe, does it make a sound?) It's a lot more than I care to put into words at this hour suffice to say that The Comedian was the only one of the bunch who cracked up under the pressure (remember he said that he 'got the punchline') and was an easy target for Veidt. Keep in mind that the Comedian had done a LOT of killing all of his life with no remorse but he wasn't in the position that Veidt nor Dr, M was in where he could do something about it; however he was in the unique position of having first hand experienced human depravity and thus at some point he would crackup. The biggest endgame however was that as much as Veidt and Dr. M could care less about the human condition here on earth, it would take something drastic to happen to get the nations of the world past being in a quickly destructive path towards each other and possibly evolving mentally beyond wars and fighting. Thus, that's why Dr, M was the perfect scapegoat for what happened and he understood it too. He was too godlike...it wasn't just Russia who was afriad of him, the whole world was, so why bother sticking around when he could better whatever life form he could create? Take out a few millions here and maybe they would learn the lesson that it's not all about them. And yes, to me, this made a little more sense than the original ending of simply a giant space squid. Easter egg: Did anyone notice that the WTC was not only just featured in the movie but after the destruction of most of NYC....was still standing. |
I really thought the lack of a defined "good guy" was awesome. Traditional comic book super heroes can be very one dimensional and fake. Like moe.ron said, they're so much more real and relateable - human. I also think it asked a lot of good questions about the nature of good and saving people. Is the truth more important than the greater good? Can you justify deception by bringing a greater understanding and cooperation to our world?
And the soundtrack was amazing. |
