Accidental Shooting in Houston

I just got word that an friend of our's daughter was accidentally shot and killed at a house party yesterday evening. I feel like I've been kicked in the gut:(:(:(

It was a case of a young adult playing with a gun they thought was not loaded. He waved it around and held it to her head and it discharged - there was a bullet in the chamber.

Shock and Sorrow all around. I'm posting this only to remind everyone that guns are dangerous and should always be considered to be loaded.

So sorry to hear that.

Such a tragic and terrible loss.

So sorry to hear this, srmom!

How senseless. As a parent, I completely understand that "kicked in the gut" feeling.

Why would anyone ever point a gun at someone's head?

Heartbreaking. Prayers for the family and friends of this girl.

First rules of using a gun:

Never point a gun unless you plan to shoot it.
Never shoot a gun unless you plan to kill.

I can't begin to imagine going through this horror. Everyone who was there is going to remember this for the rest of their lives. The parents of all involved will suffer, too. Bless them all, that they get through this horror show without any breakdowns.

Thank you all for the prayers and good thoughts.

Totally agree on all the rules of gun use. I think gun safety should be taught to all kids regardless of whether you own one or not.

I am having a tough time with being really angry at the kid who brought out the gun. I know it was an accident, but Christ Almighty, it's not like he spilled a glass of milk!!! I know, he is going to have to live with this forever, I know he is incredibly remorseful, I know all that - but I'm just really mad.

The parents and family are still in shock. The funeral is going to be postponed until next week because they have many out of state relatives who need to come in, and also it is spring break this week and many of her friends were out of town when this occurred.

Geez - what a tragedy.

srmom: Do you know if he will face any criminal charges? Not that I necessarily think he should, just curious.

srmom 03-18-2009 10:11 AM

He has been charged with manslaughter, due to the accidental nature of the shooting.

Good. While I highly doubt that he meant this to happen, there should be consequences. And I agree with you about everyone learning basic gun safety. Many high schools don't allow people to graduate without Driver's Education or learning to swim; gun safety is just as important.
