Grad Chapter Questions.. Dilemma!
Hello everyone!
Here is my dilemma.. I recently graduated from school, which has an active undergrad chapter of Omega Psi Phi. I was not able pledge.. Due to my mom getting very sick the last 3 years of college (requiring me to work full time and go to school full time to help support my mom with hospital bills and such). So here I am graduated and completely immersed in my civil duties of serving my community now that my mom is finally better! I am heavily involved in 3 community organizations, working with kids teaching, and coaching little league for under privileged children. So, I was doing my research on joining a grad chapter and found out that since I came from a school with an active undergrad chapter that I have to wait 48 months before even applying to your great fraternity. So, I ask those who can give me an informed answer, do I actually have to wait 4 years before even applying? Is there any real way of bypassing this? If I go to grad school in the fall, could I become eligible to join your fraternity as a 1st year grad student? Or is the 48 month/4 year wait requirement just the law of the land? |
OPP isn't going anywhere. Obviously the rule was implemented for a good reason.

that rule has only been proposed. It is not final yet. Long story short, you are good for now.

Must have minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited University. Note: If the candidate graduated from a university, which has an active chapter of Omega Psi Phi, they must wait 48 months after graduation before applying for membership. |
I feel it dipset.
Just gotta wait those 4 years I guess. At least till the policy doesn't change within the next 4 years. In the meantime, I'd suggest you just try and get acquainted with the chapter members. |
Dipset, do yourself a favor and go holla at the bruhs. Believe me that rule is not in effect. Why it's on the site, I have no idea. But it's not in effect.

This may be a ridiculous thing to tell an aspirant if the rule has been passed. Instead of getting an aspirant's hopes up, just tell him to talk to the Omegas. THEN he will know whether the rule is in effect or not, and whether there are exceptions made. Never advise an aspirant to go INTO it with a disregard for something that is on the national website. (I think that rule is an excellent one. But, that's another thread topic. :)) |

4 years is a bit too much though.
@DrPhil, why do you think it's a good idea? I'd like to hear those reasons. Quote:

Agreeing with dipset, I to have a story with kind of the same outcome.
I went to my college in 2004. In 2004, I already knew what I wanted to affiliate myself with. So, Fall 05, They had their interest meeting. I went and so did others about 5 of us. I was a soph music major with 26 credits. I didnt know you had to have 30. Being a music major, SHORTS your credits. Normal classes gives you 3, music gives you 1 maybe 2. So they told me to come back next semester where I changed majors. That same semester, They got suspended. The other guys who were at the interest meeting with me, became members and crossed at another campus; PROBATE and all. So for about 4 semesters, Omega Psi Phi wasn't on our campus. Spring 07 came and they started coming back, saying and posting interest meetings. We had a spring interest meeting in February. About 30-40 people showed up.....SERIOUSLY. Out of the 30-40 people, they cut it down to 12 of us. So we waited and waited and that semester came to an end. So now its Fall 07. I graduate Spring 08. So as Fall 07 is closing to an end, I personally dont want the current and older members to think that I just want to join JUST TO GET MY LETTERS AND LEAVE. I was going back home far away from my college. So I went to the grad chapter interest meeting. Their, they did meet and greets for all the interested members. When it came to me, I told them I was still in college, graduating next semester. The Vice-Basileus came and took me to my chapters off-campus advisor, who was present at the interest meeting. I then asked him about the chapter on my campus, which he would know everything about; being he's off-campus advisor. He tells me to my face "that chapter, WILL NOT have a intake process this semester or next semester (Spring 08)" So April of Spring 08, FUNNY THING HAPPENED. They crossed 3 new members into that chapter on that campus without, putting up a single interest meeting paper, after the off-campus advisor told me there will be NO INTAKE PROCESS. The on-campus advisor, didn't even know what was going on. I graduated and as soon as I got home from college, I went and started looking for grad chapters. I read the Omega Psi Phi website and it said, "graduates of active chapters must wait 4 yrs" So my question, after everyone has read my story; Since they only crossed 1 line in 4yrs and have not been active in about 2 yrs until the semester I graduated, where does that leave me??? Thank you gentlemen for your time and concern. |

This seems like an interesting rule. While this does not apply to me as I am female. I am just curious. In a situation somewhat like the man's above, what if a young man transfers into a school with an active chapter but they do not have membership intake process for 2+ years (the typical time for a transfer student from a community college/junior college.)

your situation is similar to mine. I am trying to hang in there, but I am still unsure of what to do. I have had conversations with some grad members and still i am not getting a clear answer either way.. |
