I've never heard of something like that occurring.

Whatever they did must have been bad if the university recognized them for a year, even though HQ didn't. I'm curious to get some more info on this story.

"Trustee" status entails putting a group of alums in charge of the chapter while it is reorganized. They are still recognized by National but the actives have very little input in decisions. It is a very severe punishment for Kappa Sig National to do this. For HQ to appeal the University punishment is rare indeed. There is more to this story and it would be interesting to find out from an active what is going down.

Thanks.

Is it common for a university to recognize an organization in this status? According to the article, the university recognized them for a year after they were put in trustee status. That's the part that seemed odd to me.

Honestly this sucks. the U of A chapter was one of our best chapters. To lose these type of chapters is not good, as other fraternities would solidify their positions, and when we recolonize we are going to have to build from the ground up. Hopefully national's especially Mitch Wilson fights this and they can get re-instated.

I honestly don't feel the least bit sorry for them. Right before our chapter closed down there, the KSig's were beyond rude to us. The president came over and apologized, claiming it was their "alums", but I personally found it an "excuse" for the behavior.

Now this was in 2003 mind you, but the behavior truly left a bad taste in my mouth for the chapter.

Mind you this is my perception as an alum.

It probably depends on the University but most are willing to allow the "trustees" in charge if they see a noticeable improvement in the fraternity as it relates to the community and university. There is a set criteria that the chapter has to meet to take it off "trusteeship". These are usually presented to the University prior to implementing "trusteeship" and everyone knows well in advance what it takes to return the chapter back to the undergrads.

This really sounds as if the administration at U of AZ is either going in an anti-greek direction or that some Fraternities have been abusing the system and become out of control. What I suspect is that U of AZ has been feed up with some of the antics and may have decided to make examples of past transgressors. This is just an educated guess though. I do find it strange that Kappa Sigma IHQ is appealing this sanction by U of AZ. They usually do not do so and are very serious about Risk Management issues. It would be good to hear from U of AZ actives about what is going on.
