ABC News: What Would You Do? - Hazing
For those of you that don't know, ABC News has a show on Tuesdays at 10:00pm, asking the question "What Would You Do?" They set up situations where everyday people are tested to see how they will react to moral and ethical dilemmas.
For example: What would you do... If you saw a deli worker giving a blind person the wrong change back? If you saw a sleeping baby in a car alone? If a restaurant owner refused to serve Mexicans? If you saw people steal items during an open house? etc. This Tuesday, part of the episode will ask what you would do if you saw people hazing each other? The actors are made to look like fraternity and sorority members, and apparently the public's reaction to girls vs. boys is completely different. I guess some people even join in on the hazing! I thought it might be interesting to watch. |
I actually just saw another preview for this, and from what I can tell, the "Greek" letters on the shirts and jackets are W, Psi, and a sideways Delta. I'm interested to see if they talk to any of the people who watch the hazing but don't do anything, only to have one of them answer, "I didn't think it was real because those aren't Greek letters."
Tonight at 10! |
Thanks for the heads up, I watched it with one of my pledge brothers and we thought it was ridiculous. I can't believe no one said "W isn't even a greek letter!" If I had been walking by the first thing I would have said was "First of all you're not even a real fraternity. W isn't a greek letter and if you think this is what a fraternity is all about than you're just stupid and very wrong" That was really the worst thing, that people think this is what GLOs do. The host of the show even told one of the passerbys afterwards that this is what "they" really do.
On another note how about the two women who took part in the hazing and only said they felt bad when they were confronted by the cameras - and one of them has a daughter in a sorority! I hope its not like mother like daughter here because that mother cruelly took part in public hazing and wasn't even smart enough to think up good pledge nicknames - "Vomit" and "Ultimate Slut," REALLY?!?! |
I did watch this and was sickened by the host repeatedly saying that this is what really happens. Even when I've encountered sorority hazing, it was nothing like what they were showing. I too was appalled by that mom. OMG what a witch!

I actually like this show....I liked the episode about the Mexican workers and the effects of prejudice.
I didn't like this episode, especially the idea that this is what always happens... That mom was a bitch.... |
I was definitely amazed by some people's reactions. The fact that people would join in on that is disgusting. I thought that people would be more sympathetic with the girls, but it was almost worse. And the people taking pictures... really?!
I was angry with the way the show portrayed Greeks. Even some of the comments by the psychologist were misleading. And yes, when the host said, "This is what they do," I was pretty mad. I understand the experiment, but would it have been so hard to start the show by saying, "Greek organizations provide students with opportunities to excel academically, to help in the community, and to build social skills. It isn't all 'Animal House' and the stereotypes that everyone assumes it to be. But hazing does still occur in some places.. blah blah blah" |
