cabinet members' Greek affiliation

The President's final nominee for a cabinet position is Kathleen Sebelius who attended Trinity University in Washington D.C., which has no Greek life. The only nominee who lists a Greek membership is Agriculture Secrtary Tom Vilsack, a Delta Upsilon from Hamilton College.

Others who could possibly be Greeks are: Tim Geithner, Dartmouth; Robert Gates, William & Mary; Eric Holder, Columbia; Ken Salazar, Colorado College; Hilda Solis, Cal Poly., Pomona; Ray Lahood, Bradley; Steven Chu, U. Rochester; and Janet Napolitano, Santa Clara.

Robert Gates is APO according to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_..._and_education)

While not on the Cabinet itself, the nominee for the Cabinet-level office of United States Trade Representative is Ron Kirk, who apparently joined a local at Austin College called Chi Delta Eta.

Robert Gates' wife Rebecca is a Gamma Phi Beta from Washington State University.

I found some sources that list Eric Holder as a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. ??? Haven't been able to find any other GLO connections with the others.

Robert Gates is an Alpha Phi Omega brother, as is Melody Barnes (Director of the Domestic Policy Council - not Cabinet but important).
Hillary Clinton is an honorary APO Brother.

And of course we can't forget First Lady Michelle Obama - also an APO Brother. :D

Did anything come of the Michelle Obama/AKA discussion?

snakeyD 03-03-2009 04:59 AM

Timothy Geithner was not a member of a GLO at Dartmouth.

As previously discussed, I don't think Mrs.Obama had a full understanding of what the offer of membership meant. Does anyone know if she was offered membership in a sorority as an undergraduate? Were there not both NPHC and NPC groups on campus?

Given the nature of city-wide and county-wide chapters, it's tough to say whether there were any members of NPHC orgs on campus in the 1980s.
