DePauw: Three Fraternities on Probation

The campus paper reports that three DePauw fraternities, Phi Kappa Psi, Delta Tau Delta, and Alpha Tau Omega, are now on probation. For two of them, the probation has been extended:

This blase attitude disturbs me. If I read the article correctly, level four is the highest, with level one being the lowest. He seems to be blowing it off.

If you're on a probation, it should reflect poorly on your house, IMO. This was not some stretched violation of hazing. This is something they should know 1) not to do, or 2) know how to cover their butts.

DePauw ATO

Within the last two years, ATO had just gotten off a long probationary period where their headquarters did a membership review, they had an alumni living in their house, and they had a university/IFC-mandated quota smaller than other houses.

What happened with that? Apparently there are no residual behavior consequences at DePauw.

Many people don't think that drinking underage is that big of a deal, therefore they won't think poorly of a GLO that does it or gets probation for it. If they do, they'll be more like "dumbasses shouldn't have gotten caught" rather than "OMG alcohol."

Depending on the campus culture, such probations can even raise a group's desirability and prestige.

So true. On my campus any sorority who is reprimanded due to alcohol is looked upon poorly, while fraternities are not. Fraternities on probation are the organizations that more guys want to join.

Update Feb. 27, 2009: Beta Theta Pi Added to List of Those on Probation

Reportedly level one probation for unregistered event, providing alcohol to underage students, etc.:

They still have an alumni living in their house.
