Proof the (some!) Republicans don't "think".

But the real question one has to ask is that he knew he would be working with a liberal Democrat, so why even bother running if you knew that you would be uncomfortable doing the job?

I am thinking the reason he pulled out was because the President was going to gerrymander the Census by putting it under control of the Oval.

That being said, both sides try to pull something every ten years so they have better congressional districts, so this is really not that surprising.

It's still surprising the way that he pulled out...his abruptness...and his claim that he wasn't 'clear' of what he was getting into...

Hmmm...and he will probably vote against the stimulus package.

O well.

Well, as with everything else, we probably don't know the whole story. On a much smaller scale, I think a lot of us have heard of people who had job interviews, were promised one thing, and then started work and experienced something different. It's possible that the President expressed one thing during the initial vetting process, and that Gregg noticed a far different vibe as he got closer to taking the position.

I think there's a difference between working with a President from the other party, and thinking that he'll take your views into account, and perhaps then realizing that he wouldn't really listen to you at all. From what I've read, that was part of the concern, that he thought the President was bringing him on the Cabinet for appearances, i.e. "See, you can tell I want a bipartisan effort because I have Republicans working on my administration."
