Mono & Strep Throat
Hey everyone, I've been away from here for a while cuz I found out I had mono, as well as strep throat. I'm mostly over the strep throat now, but I'm still recovering from the mono. Who knows how long that will last. I have no idea how I got it, either, cuz I never drink after anyone, and I haven't kissed anyone for a while. There's a chance though that someone could have like coughed or sneezed on their hand right before they shook mine during rush. I'm sure lots of people got sick from shaking hundreds of hands. Oh well, just to let u know where I've been & be careful everyone!

I hope you feel better soon!
At my school, we're not allowed to shake hands or really even touch the PNM's at all, which is probably a good thing. I'm sorry to hear that you have mono and strep at the same time. I've never had either, but I'm sure it must be awful... Get well soon! |
Aww sweetie I'm sorry. i have had mono before and I know how it feels. It's awful! I hope you're better.

Good luck in getting over those bugs! Multiple viruses are nasty--a minister in town has had (I swear) West Nile, mono, and cytomegalovirus and he's just dragging. Stay rested!
|
Hope you get to feeling 100% very soon! I get strep throat at least once a year and know that it's bad enough on its own. I can't imagine having to deal with it AND mono!
Feel better! :) Carrie |
ZLB,
I cracked up laughing when I read the title of this thread, because according to the infirmary at my school, you could only be afflicted with one of two diseases: mono or strep throat. They were curable by Tylenol, Cepacol lozenges, and gargling with salt water. But it sounds like you have the real thing.....bummer. Hope you feel better soon!! |
Hey,
I had mono and strep more than a year ago. Strep is common with mono. You can carry mono for 6 months with out ever showing any symptoms then boom there they are. So you have to look way back and see how you might have got it. My strep went away quick but i didn't shake the mono for 8 months though. Luckly I never felt tired or run down but I was limited to what I could do because mono can ruin you insides if you are very physicaly active. I never figured out why that happens but thats what my doc told me what would happen. Just take it easy and pray it goes away quick. The only good hing is you get mono only once unless you have a week strain now. |
I hope you feel better soon! I too have had mono.
I found out immediately after taking my last Winter Quarter final. I figured I hadn't been feeling well because I hadn't been sleeping. Cram Cram Cram!!! I told the nurse that if I had failed my finals I'd be back for a letter from her so I could petition to retake them! LOL Thank God I passed them. :) Being the fool that I am though I still went on Spring Break to Vegas and partied till I dropped. Which of course was easier to do since I was sick. I remember living on ice cream and alcohol that week! Awwww, I miss college. :( But I guess I'm lucky to still be here after that. Hmmm, I did learn something from my mono though. I now will NEVER forget where my spleen is! |
Well, I just got the strep part last week, no one has said anything about mono. I didn't really have much of a sore throat, but geesh, I thought I would never get rid of the high fever and throwing up..I lived on popsiciles for 4.5 days! Appetite still not normal.
I know it wasn't Rush. One moment I was fine, the next I was coughing my head off! I still am a little weak and still got some congestion stuff but hopefully, it's going away..I used to be braver in my younger days. Too bad we aren't close enuff to commerisate, lol! But then again, it's prob healthier, lol! Take care! More antibotic and popsicile over here, pleaze! :) |
Oh, ZLB, that sounds positively awful! :( Rest up and I hope you feel better soon!
33girl ~ according to my school's medical department, no matter what complaint you came in with, you were pregnant. Even if you were male. OK, I exaggerate ~ but I did go in one morning at 3am with a sore throat and a fever, and the idiot on call decided (without even taking a culture) that I had strep and I should take penicillin. Turns out it was a viral infection, and antibiotics are useless against viruses... so I was stuck swallowing these huge pills 4x/day for 10 days down my sore throat, because once you start a course of antibiotics you can't stop. *sigh* |
Take some extra Vitamin c- 6000mg a day, a lot of echinacea as many as you can pop, and a multi -b aslong with your normal multi . . . you'll get better faster . . .

Get wall quickly, all...
Haven't had strep since I had my tonsils removed at age six. Mono does bring back an unpleasant memory, though. In about 1968 (or so) our football team was in a bowl game in Florida and my girlfriend (now wife) and I were going to go. A truly amazing thing that she got permission given her parents and the social climate of that time -- not nearly as liberal as today. Well, she got mono, so we ended up listening to the game on the radio at her parents house. Then her mom got furious with her older brother and me for drinking a six pack during the game. Guess she thought that three beers each over a three hour game would turn us into raging drunks. That really screwed up Christmas Break. DeltAlum |
SICKNESS>>>
Gotta HATE getting sick. Thats the part of Greek Life they never tell you about. When one gets sick, alls ya get sick. I am getting over the sickness that first appeared durning rush (a month ago). Southside Steve (his nickname) shows up and coughs allover his hands and then shakes hands then tells us not to get to close 'cause he's sick. I SO KNEW we were all doomed then. He was like the freakin' host monkey from the movie Outbreak. I saw the epidemic spread to our brothers first, then alums, then new members, now the chicks who hang withthe chapter are getting sick. It starts with the sore throat, then goes to a head cold, then a chest cold, then the sore throat comes back as the chest cold clears up. Finally once you start to feel better, you loose your voice. Takes about 2 weeks to get over fully. I probably would have recoped sooner, but I thought I could drink my way through the epidemic. Actually, everytime I went out drinking It set the recovery back about three days. That sucked 'cause I like to drink. ;)

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to college. It's just a fact - if you didn't get mono in high school, you will get it freshman year in college. You don't eat right, you don't get enough sleep, and you are probably living in a dorm with 800 other freshmen. It's inevitable. When I had mono, the health services people told me I had strep and gave me penicilin. I continued to party and drink with glands the size of golf balls, and wondered why I never got better. I went through finals with mono (yeah, beat that!), and by the time I went home for Xmas break, I was white as a ghost and had lost 20 pounds (and I usually only weigh around 100). Yeah, it sucks. I hope you get better soon, but it's just one of those college experiences you can't escape - kinda like a hangover. :) Get well soon!
