Recruiting a deactivated member

I have a friend who I believe will be a good brother. He is interested in joining, however as a freshmen he was initiated into another fraternity. After some incident he immediately left and deactivated. He will be a junior when we pledge next.

I've viewed the bylaws and constitution. My question is, has any chapter initiated a once member to another fraternity? What is the process like i.e. paperwork, etc.

I thought you were thinking of deactivating yourself? Or are you the friend who quit one fraternity and wants to join another?

I was helping my friend deactivate his fraternity (for his own reasons). He succesfully did and wants to join another house after a year or living in a shared apt.

I wanted to see if anyone had more experience about this issue or opinions.

Your bylaws don't tell you what the process is for bringing in a new member? Why not ask your regional director or HQ?

I have never heard of a man having been initiated into another fraternity, deactivating, and then pledging and initiating into Sigma Chi.

From the Constitution.

Quote:

Statute No. 3 Membership

B. Eligibility

3.07 ...each person initiated into membership in the Fraternity shall, at the time of his initiation,

b. Not be or have been a member of any other fraternity of like character, except as specifically approved by the Executive Committee;
I would guess that if the man were to receive a written letter from the previous fraternity's headquarters confirming that his membership was terminated, and he gets approval by the Executive Committee, then I guess it is possible. And that would be the process.

the constitution is very gray it seems. Depending on the reason for his leaving the other fraternity, was the other fraternity NOT of like character to Sigma Chi? If so then it may be a valid reason he left.

In either case speak to HQ about it. Send a letter to your Grand Praetor maybe.
