Sorry, but I couldn't resist mentioning the cute ad I've seen 3 times today. It's for Boston Chicken or a supermarket, etc.

Mom is going college after being out for several years. At the end of the ad, her studymate asks her she has thought about "a sorority?!"


The first thing that popped in my mind was "What a GC topic, lol!!

Hey that's cool, and it shows that the advertisers are forward thinking that you don't have to be the stereotype and be 18, blonde and size 2 to be a sorority girl, you can go Greek later in life too!

That is so true though. My buds at Sigma Chi got some great pledges this semester and one of them is almost 30!! Hes awesome though. So it really goes to show you dont have to be young to be in a Fraternity or sorority!!

I love it! Makes me think of all the "older guys" that came back from WWII and pledged; 3 of my husband's uncles did just that!

What a cute idea! BC doesn't advertise here. Of course, the next step could be "hell night". I can just see it...

It's an ad for Publix supermarkets (huge chain in the SE). I saw it last night and my hubby says.."There you go - a positive media image!"

For our Fall 2001 Pledge class, we had a girl who is in her 30's, married, and a freshman studying criminal justice. A lot of our girls still talk about her behind her back, they haven't given her a chance to show herself etc. She is now our treasurer and is very strict, she's doing her job soo well, now more then ever she is getting more and more remarks. I think it is totally wrong for them to talk about this sweet lady.

I can't imagine being in my 30's and wanting to hang out with a bunch of 20 year olds.....I just don't see someone older fitting in, it's an age thing, we're just in different places. My chapter has a one year live in commitment anyway so you couldn't be married or anything anyway.

One of our brothers is like 27. Another one is 26. They are both graduating. The one guy is our number one. He started the fraternity here.

My boyfriend's fraternity had a member that was almost 30. (And he dated, or tried to, girls our age!) We all found him a little creepy and wondered why exactly why he wanted to be in a fraternity. It wasn't as if he joined as an alum.

On the other hand, back in the day, Greeks were all kinds of ages. One of our founders was already a widow, and another was 16! Maybe we would have found it less creepy if it was more common nowadays.

On third thought ... I think HE was just creepy, period, regardless of being in a fraternity.

And then some of us bitch about how they wouldnt accept someone who isnt 18-21. If ya'll dont want the stereotype, dont fluckin act it. k? Geez. FYI , the college demographic is CHANGING. the day of the 18-21 year old is OVER. If your org is even planning to excell in the 21st century, ya betwer damnyn well accept the fact that the future of college life looks alot different than the past of college life. I.E., thre future of greek life looks a lot different than the past of greek life. The stats speak for themselves.

Older members make great assets. I was initiated with a guy named william who was 36! He had been in the millitary, then ran a real estate co. for several years before going back to college and moving into the house and going greek. He was a hella better brother than some of the fools I got in with. MESSAGE PART II, "I'd rather have a brother/member as an officer who has a bit of life experience and can handle crap thansome ass 18 year old with ZERO life experience. In todays Greek World, theres no room and/or time for on the job learning. Sorry, but lifesaver is too busy to play kindergarten teacher. I've had enough of holding hands and wiping noses.

no offense Lifesaver but in defense of my sister above (AXWhoah), someone older would not have fit in to my sorority at A&M either. UTSA is a commuter school and many of the students that go there are older-as my brother was, he was 28 when he graduated. It does not work that way at A&M and probably other large universities.
I am sure older students do make a great asset but some schools just are not accepting of that. Maybe someday in the future.

As a 23 year old pledge, I can say that age does have a benifit. At 18 I was irresponsible, and not the kind of girl who could make any contribution to any group, let alone one that works such as the GLO's do.
My sisters are happy to have me, despite being 5 years older than the rest of my pledge class. I agree with the above poster, that times are changing, and at some universities that means the greeks have to change as well.
