Dolls for Sale...Innocent mistake or Out for Profit?
A Jacksonville promotions company came under fire Monday after it announced its latest product: a doll inspired by slain toddler Caylee Marie Anthony.
The Inspirational Caylee Sunshine Doll, which plays a song when her bellybutton is pushed, is on sale for $29.99 at cayleedoll.com. Late Monday afternoon, the lawyer representing Caylee's grandparents, George and Cindy Anthony, was outraged. "This is an example of another person trying to profit from the tragedy of Caylee's death," lawyer Brad Conway said. "He has never met my clients, spoken to my clients and has not gotten authority of any type to do this. And after I have a chance to research it, I will likely take whatever legal action I can." http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/...,6550304.story (CNN) -- The company that brought the world Beanie Babies is now selling dolls named Sweet Sasha and Marvelous Malia, but a spokeswoman insists that the dolls have nothing to do with President Obama's young daughters. Ty, the maker of Beanie Babies, is introducing two new Ty Girlz dolls named Marvelous Malia and Sweet Sasha. Although it would be a stretch to say the 12-inch-tall dolls bear a resemblance to the first family's Sasha, 7, and Malia, 10, they appear to be the only African-American dolls in the 30-doll Ty Girlz collection. "We feel it is inappropriate to use young private citizens for marketing purposes," said first lady Michelle Obama's press secretary, Katie McCormick Lelyveld. When CNN asked a Ty executive whether the Obama girls were the inspiration for the dolls, she hesitated several seconds before answering. "Information concerning the development of our products and how we come up with names, how we select them, how we trademark -- that's considered as proprietary," Ty Senior Vice President of Sales Tania Lundeen said. "I can't go any further with that question." http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/01/22/obama.dolls/ |
*blank stare* at the Caylee dolls.
As in terms of the Malia and Sasha dolls, Ty (which is based out of Chicago, BTW) is trying to make a profit. If the dolls weren't brown skin and didn't had their hair like the Obama girls have theirs, I would pass it off. Ty has been know for naming products after famous people. |
A Caylee doll? Sounds profiteering to me... Like someone is paying for the defense. I could see if all the funds were going to the "Missing & Exploited Children"--but overall profiteering from a story that still up in the air?
Y'all forget MO is a Harvard Lawyer... She ain't gonna outright say it, or do it, but where's her cut, for real? If my child's names are going to be out there where some major corporation is clocking dollars, then I need residuals... Oh, today, they are named them "Malia" and "Sasha"... What was the choice before? "M'Niqua" and "Shererota"? Hmmm mmm? The other issue, you don't put your children on blast like that. What if the materials have some crazy additive that makes babies sick? Like melamine? And here you are the first family name all out in the open, in the midst of that H.A.M!!! WTH? This ain't the Cream of Wheat, Rice and Pancakes mix, Dayum! |
Does TY really think that the public is that stupid?

Image is protected by law. The doll maker did not have premission and therefore will most likely to either pay royalties or discontinue the line, or both.

The Caylee doll has been nixed...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090127/...anthony_doll_2 The money would have gone to the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children. But even John Walsh would have thought that the dolls were creepy. |
The Caylee doll idea is probably one of the most repulsive and absurd things I've ever heard. Does it come complete with duct tape over its mouth for maximum realism?
Let that poor little girl rest in peace. |

That really is disgusting, the first story. A doll after a slain girl? Come on. Who would even want that? Why would that sell?
As for the first daughters... That really shouldve been cleared through the family. I wouldn't want to go to school one day and a classmate comes in with an 11" version of my likeness. Is Mattel gonna do a First Family collection? Sheesh |
I'm not surprised about the Caylee doll. I remember when Halloween costumes were being made of Ron Goldman and Nicole Simpson, complete with a slit throat.
|
This guy was out for a profit, and it sickens me! It also created great outrage in the Florida community across the state. I am glad the idea got nixed!

What I don't understand is what makes Caylee's death any different from other children who were murdered? Are they going to make dolls named after those children too?
And yes, I think it's silly and only for profit. |
