Kentucky Cheerleading Continues Dominance
Win 17th national title
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Dominance is the only word that is needed to describe the UK cheerleading team. For the 17th time in school history, the Kentucky Wildcats are home of the Universal Cheerleading Association National Championship trophy. The back-to-back national champions have now claimed the national championship trophy 13 times since 1995. During that stretch, Kentucky only lost possession of the trophy in 2007 and 2003. Before 1995, Kentucky won the 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1992 national championships. Kentucky won the competition by a margin of 14.5 points on Sunday night. Kentucky finished with a score of 473.5 out of 500 with the next closest being Alabama with 459 points and UCF with 454 points. Rounding out the top five was Memphis in fourth, and Louisiana and Kansas tied for fifth. Other Southeastern Conference schools in the top 15 were Tennessee, who tied for eight with Cincinnati, and Mississippi State and Mississippi finishing 11th and 12th, respectfully. more here Go Big Blue! |
I'm surprised that Tennessee got eighth place this year, normally their program places in the top 5. Kentucky is just an awesome state for cheerleading in general (my high school friends and I used to joke that Kentucky breeded cheerleaders) because they're just that good. UK in particular has a really strict/amazing cheer program and set a very high standard for themselves and they always work hard it's pretty awesome that they've captured 17 titles, they definately deserve it.

My mom is a former cheer coach so I follow the big competitions. They're a great group. They also get alot of good talent at their tryouts every year.

For those impatient former cheerleaders (like me) that can't wait until the comp airs on ESPN2 here's the youtube link to UK's 09 routine..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcOXcVTqhtk unfortunately, it's a side view but you can still see everything.. UK looks amazing.. and all the flyers were incredibly tight (save for the little bobble halfway through). They totally deserved 1st. |
You can also find their routines (and everyone else's) on Varsity.com. Thank goodness, because I never seem to be able to catch them on TV!

Is the difference between DI and DIA the same as the football DI and DIA classification? just wondering. thanks

Yes, if I'm not mistaken, that's what UCA uses to determine divisions. |
UCA D1A = NCAA D1A (or D1 FBS)
UCA D1 = NCAA D1AA (or D1 FCS) and D1 schools with no football |
holy crap NAU was actually there competing! I'm like shocked!
edit: U of A was there too! Hmm, I wonder if they have been going for years but since ESPN only shows it for 30 minutes, they were never shown. Either way, pretty darn cool. :D |
