How are local chapters recognized?

I am the Vice President of our Greek System and we have a fraternity that's not recognized by NIC and I was wondering how other schools handlerecognizing situations like this. Thanks

My local sorority is at the University of Michigan. We ARE recognized by the University and by other NPC sororities. We rush with them during Formal Fall recruitment and also during Informal Winter Recruitment. We are a pretty close knit greek system. Pretty much everyone is friends and hangs out at the same places. Also all of the sororities and fraternities, whether they are national or local, compete in Greek Week and Greek President's Council.

My sorority is not considered to be an official part of greek affairs. We are recognized by the university as a student organization and have to abide by all relevant requirements (submitting local constitution, minimum membership list, officer list, and faculty advisors every academic year). We choose not to participate in formal rush as our governing documents describe a rush that is quite different. However, I am not sure that we could not participate if we approached greek affairs about it. I tend to doubt it as formal rush is actually organized by the NPC, I believe. However, I could be wrong.
