Our sisters in the Miss America Pageant
The thread in the Pi Phi forum inspired this post! Do you ladies know which women competing in this year's pageant are sorority women? So far, I only know of two:
Miss Iowa Erin Smith Alpha Gamma Delta Truman State University and Miss West Virginia Danae Demasi Pi Beta Phi I have a feeling CP2000 will know this one! :D |
Hey Sandy! It's sure nice to be back on GreekChat since I was suffering severe withdrawal! I belong to what is basically an online alumna chapter for Delta Zetas and one of the other members is actually working for the Miss America pageant. She's been giving us the scoop for the past week and I wrote and asked her if she knew the Greek affiliations of any of the contestants. I'll post on here again if I get any info from her!

Ok, don't quote me...
but I think Miss Mississippi Phi Mu at USM |
OTW, you are too funny!

I don't really know of any of my DG sisters being in Miss America this year, but love hearing about any of my NPC sisters out there! Keep it coming, ladies! |
I wonder why the contestants don't advertise their GLO affiliation that much?
I saw that the Miss Iowa contestant has it in her contestant's profile that she is an AGD, but I didn't see it for the other contestants who are Greek at this year's Miss America?
Many of them put honor GLOs but not their NPC (or NPHC) groups there? I wonder why? In Miss USA, some of them had their NPC affiliation (one was an Alpha Phi, I recall) posted on their profiles.... |
I know for a fact that Miss Pennsylvania is not a Greek. She's really cool, regardless. I really hope she wins.

Re: OTW, you are too funny!
I think the stereotype of being a "sorority girl" is still a hard wage to battle/defend to the masses who never pledged a sorority or fraternity for that matter. There are so many negative images out there.
When you are running for such an honor the last thing you need is a bunch of people thinking you are either an air head or some stuck up chick who paid a lot of money to be in an elitest organization. Sometimes its better to make it what you need happen and then say..."Look at me, how can you say such negative things about sorority life etc." You know? Quote:

Congratulations OREGON!!
Miss America 2002, Katie Marie Harman of Gresham, OR!
A first for Oregon! I also liked how Miss West Virgina, Danae DeMasi, mentioned her sorority, Pi Beta Phi, by name in her video vignette! It was a nice plug for Greeks! |
Finer, I'm not sure if I am understanding your reply or not. Are you saying that in certain circumstances, you "almost deny being in a GLO". I always mention that I am an Alpha Gamma Delta (since 1974!!).
If someone wants to be selected as representing My America, then she shouldn't be afraid to mention an organization that she is a member of. I know that there has been at least one AGD Miss America and I am sure that there are many other GLOs represented. BTW anyone else notice.., remember when the "41 other contestants" were in the back room voting and the now-ex Miss A asked who showed be Miss A, girls were shouting New York, Oregon, etc....one lone voice shouted "Miss Iowa"!!! (Yea, true, she wasn't in the top 5.)) But she wanted her voice heard! Miss Oregon is a lovely choice ((and looks like Jenna Elfman/Dharma a little!) :) |
No, I NEVER would deny my membership in my Illustrious organization. Anyone who knows me knows I am a dues paying, card carrying Sister of the Dove... for 10 years.
Quite frankly, I was not referring to NPHC Sororities when I posted. Believe me when I say this... the "sorority girl image" is NOT the same image one usually gets when you consider or are exposed to an NPHC organization. Most people (the big picture) think of WGLO when they think of sororities. The image we get is that which was portrayed in "Legally Blonde". So I can understand if the alumni member decided not to initially highlight her membership. Quote:

Yeah for a local!
Miss Tennessee Stephanie Culberson is the former President of a local sorority. I think I read that it is Sigma Nu Sigma at Lee University.
