Theta Chi Chapter Closes (U of Oregon)

The Theta Chi chapter at the U of Oregon has closed. An article reports:

http://media.www.dailyemerald.com/me...-3579075.shtml

Excerpts from campus paper’s article:

The University chapter of Theta Chi closed its doors last Monday after being on an extended probation period because the members of the house failed to meet University standards to remain part of the Greek Community. Live-in members must now find alternative housing before winter term begins.

. . . The local chapter was on probation for several years for "behaviors that reflected poorly on both the organization and the actions of individual members," according to an announcement distributed to the Greek community last Monday.

. . . the decision to disaffiliate the chapter came from the University administration, Theta Chi International Headquarters, and local alumni of the on-campus Theta Chi chapter, according to the announcement.

.
. . . The Greek announcement stated that the Interfraternity Council would "work to provide opportunities where Theta Chi could successfully return at a time that is healthy for them to do so if they choose."

The letter that we received:

Sisters,

This week the University administration, Theta Chi International Headquarters, and local alumni of the Theta Chi chapter on campus made the decision to disaffiliate Theta Chi fraternity from the University of Oregon. All three parties felt it would be in the best interest of the chapter, as well as the greater community, to solidify this
decision before the culmination of the fall term. Theta Chi is no longer recognized as a University of Oregon fraternity.

Theta Chi had been on extended probation that spanned numerous years for behaviors that reflected poorly on both the organization and the actions of individual members. Those behaviors were choices that were made by the membership of Theta Chi. It is in our community's best interest to focus on the choices of the members of this organization throughout the last decade as opposed to the decisions of the University in response to those choices. However, we also need the entire Greek community to come together and move forward, supporting the men as they continue as students in the UO community, even though they are no longer part of the Greek community, and work to provide opportunities where Theta Chi could successfully return at a time that is healthy for them to do so if they choose.

Please take note that the IFC and PHC have no influence in the decisions that are made at the administrative level. This decision was not a response to any one chapter, any one individual, or IFC or PHC influence. Be assured that IFC and PHC are going to work with local alumni and Theta Chi National Headquarters to ensure a successful return of the Theta Chi organization in the future.

The community can help this organization and the greater Greek community in two ways. First, we need to stop spreading rumors about how or why this organization is facing these consequences. No one instance or set of recent instances triggered this decision. Second, we need to support these men throughout the week and the next two terms. The community has experienced a tremendous amount of growth and cohesion throughout this term. The most we can do now is finish the term with a strong academic performance, take care of our interfraternal sisters and brothers, and lend an assisting hand to those men who were undoubtedly struck with heavy news during their finals week.

Interfraternally,

Ali Runyan & Geoff Palachuk
2008 PHC & IFC Presidents

No one is really sure what happened, but of course rumors are flying. They were told the weekend before finals.

THAT'S bullshit.

Unless they were all terminated by their nationals, they are alumni and damn sure are still members of the Greek community, as far as I'm concerned.

so wait wait wait...
Not only do you post your link, but it is your name too? AND you happen to insult a national organization as a whole?

If anyone feels like wasting their energy, open target.

This poster's link describes [her?] account of a crime she alleges to have occurred in Georgia 46 years ago.

However, I'm not sure I follow the logic. What does this have to do with the article about the Theta Chi chapter at the University of Oregon in the year 2008?

.....Kelly :)

Theta Chi at Oregon was on probation for a long period of time. There have been no accusations of any actions, such as sexual assault or anything to do with alcohol, that caused the chapter to have caused the closure.

Maybe I jumped to conclusions. Sorry to have offended anyone. [EDIT] Please see the policy against posting rumors, especially when your only foundation is something read on JC.

Just to further clarify, the [EDIT] comment was made on another site containing "emerald", but that comment was deleted. My comment there was also deleted.

I would just like to say that [EDIT] has been going on since before you guys were born.[EDIT]

You aren't on another site. You are on Greek Chat.

"Maybe" you jumped to conclusions? Are you frigging kidding me?

1962 -- drop it now. We do not tolerate this kind of crap here. Continue, and you will be banned. In fact, that still might happen. This is not a place where it's okay to libel national fraternal organizations.

Everyone else -- feel free to edit your own comments as necessary, ideally, I'd like to see all references of what 1962 has said removed. None of your comments have been out of line as his have been, so I'm leaving y'all alone :)

Well shucks .... it's been a whole day .... i can't remember what I said that got edited! Am I allowed to ask why the behaviors of the Oregon chapter of Theta Chi reflected poorly on the organization? And why a fraternity would be allowed to remain on probation for 7 years? ....... Am I treading lightly enough?

This is not a forum for speculation?

GeorgiaTech1962 12-24-2008 01:19 AM

hmmm, trying to catch on to this posting jazz. Maybe that other one is being monitored? darned if I know..... lol (it just plumb disappeared)!

GeorgiaTech1962 12-24-2008 01:21 AM
