Last Minute Vacation
My boyfriend found out yesterday that it's looking like he will get 2 free plane tickets from one of his corporate accounts. They have to be used in 2008 so with the holidays, next weekend is probably the time we'd travel. He finds out for sure tomorrow if he gets them, so last night we brainstormed on where we'd want to go. We also have to stay in the US, and will most likely be traveling Thursday night-Sunday.
I'd like our flight to be no more than 3 hours (from Charlotte, NC), and we both want to go somewhere warm. So far we like Texas best, and possibly Ft. Lauderdale or Tampa. We're really just looking for a city with fun nightlife and something cool to do during the day. Anyone in Texas have a recommendation on which city to go to? My friend suggested San Antonio because of the River Walk. As far as Ft. Lauderdale or Tampa go, we don't know anything about these places so any info is appreciated. |

Key West is always fun. :-) And we're having nice weather in FL right now.

I'd vote for Key West, too.

I'd suggest New York, but "New York", "December", and "warm" do not go together.
The River Walk in San Antonio is nice but kinda touristy. Key West sounds nice. I wouldn't mind being there right now - it's sunny and in the 70s there, and very rainy and dreary here. |

I thought of Miami too and one of my good friends from college lives down there. I just wasn't sure how much a decent hotel would cost and was thinking Ft. Lauderdale and Tampa might be a little cheaper. Is Key West worth it for a weekend? Is it beach weather still in December or are there other things to do during the day?
That's OK that San Antonio is touristy.. I'm a tourist! :) |

...I guess Vegas is out huh? |
Austin is a great city with fun nightlife, especially if you like music. San Antonio is a short drive away, so you could go down for the day.
Agree that Riverwalk is a bit touristy, but it is still okay to visit. Just know that the margaritas are cheaper and better off the beaten path. |

I’m voting for San Antonio if you have never been to the Alamo.

If you are looking for ideas on San Antonio(or anywhere), be sure to go to tripadvisor.com. They have destination specific forums that I have found to be very helpful when researching trips, hotels, etc.

San Antonio is my favorite town. We went there for our honeymoon and I never wanted to leave. We almost bought a house there but in the end the family convinced us to stay in Chicago. You'll love it -- try to stay at one of the older hotels like the Fairmont (the hotel that was moved across the town). There's Mi Tierra for Mexican food, Shillito's Deli, La Villita for shopping, the Riverwalk and its shops. While you can stay around the Riverwalk, it's nice to drive around the city because it quite large. San Antonio is beautiful. I love old architecture and buildings (especially churches and cathedrals) and San Antonio has alot of this. Let us know how it goes! :)
