Can Foreign Student Join Sorority ?
 

I have a friend,she lives in indonesia and she's gonna attend Olemiss next year
I know that olemiss sorority is a bit conservative and their recruitment is really competitive
Is there any chance she can join any sorority right there ?

Yes. My school is in the south and there was a foreign girl in my pledge class. I know of a couple other sororities on my campus that have members from foreign countries. Is she studying abroad or is she planning to be at ole miss for entire undergrad? If she is only going to be there for one year or one semester it will defenitely be harder to get into one. Also, since she is from indonesia it might be harder for her to get recs simply because she probably doesn't know very many alumnae, and recs are defenitely needed at ole miss.

Yes,she's gonna be there for four years
I already told her to contact ole miss panhellenic council,maybe they can help her to find alumnae who can help her with the recs

Can any Ole Miss actives or alumnae elaborate on the "novelty factor" of an international student (i.e. would it outweigh a lack of recs / comment on the general number of international students to join or try to join Panhellenic chapters at Ole Miss)?

Ole Miss' Panhellenic Council isn't the place to find recs. Standard procedure is to get recs from your hometown, but obviously, that's not really an option. Will she be visiting the US anytime this spring? If so, perhaps she could contact alumnae from wherever she is visiting (Mississippi? Nebraska?) to set up meetings (lunch, coffee, etc) to get recs that way. The way to contact alums would be through an Alumnae Panhellenic Association or area alumnae chapters. If she will not be visiting the US before June-ish (when recs should be in), she can try to find alumnae that will do phone interviews.

Also, ella99, are you in a sorority that has a chapter at Ole Miss? If so (assuming you don't go to Ole Miss), you could probably write her a rec (check your org's policies, many, but not all NPCs allow collegians from other chapters to write recs). Do you have any friends in sororities that have a chapter at Ole Miss? If so, they may be able to write her recs. Recs from a friend of a friend have a more validity than an info-only rec from a stranger at APH, so if she can get recs through your network, that would help her.

Even though the recs she would have would be from alumnae who don't know her personally, I'd like to think chapters would think, "Wow, she must be really serious about joining a sorority if she got those recs instead of using her international status as an excuse for not having them."
