Rushers: What do you do when...?
 

... you're talking with a potential new member during a rush party and she is clearly not talking? We're having recruitment this week, and the last 2 nights were weird. This is my 2nd recruitment on this side, and I still have trouble getting girls to open up if they're not already open. It's so hard to judge a girl when she doesn't talk to you, and sometimes it's not clear whether she's shy or just totally uninterested. Any advice would be great!

I will usually introduce her to another sister. Hopefully, that sister will be able to possibly spark some conversation.

Be sure you're giving her the chance to talk...I know I sometimes get all blahblahblahblahblah when I'm nervous, and that intimidates some people.

Ask her open ended questions... anything that can't be answered with a simple one word answer is good for starters. Even if she does try to give you a one word answer, pause and wait for her to elaborate. From the way she responds, you'll be able to differentiate between "shy" and "uninterested". :)

This is what we do
 

WE have our hands behind our back when we have trouble getting the girl to talk we put our hands in a prayer position this is also used when the girl is talking about sex or drinking to the extreme(YES this happens). Then the alumn will bring over food or have a girl take our spot.I had to do the prayer with a girl who told me she was really outgoing yet her eyes kept wandering and I tried talking about movies, her gap shirt etc. Some of my other sisters got along fine with her and others struggled. Apparently she chose to go DZ.

Offer to get her something and maybe lead her towards a corner (if introducing another sister didn't work), sometimes people are more friendly if the situation appears more intimate.
