Rowan Unrecognized Greek Orgs

So that thread by that Corey person about being a DKE at Rowan got me curious. Why are there so many unrecognized Greek Orgs at Rowan? Here is from their website:

Quote:

We would like to advise all students and parents/guardians that there are groups of University students that are not recognized by the University. For your own well-being, we discourage you from attending their events and from affiliating with these organizations. Unrecognized groups of University students include:
  • Delta Zeta
  • Delta Kappa Epsilon
  • Kappa Sigma
  • Phi Kappa Sigma
  • Phi Sigma Sigma
  • Theta Chi

That seems like an awful lot of unrecognized Greek Orgs. I did a search on here and Google and couldn't find out much. Anyone know?

I was under the impression that all NPC sororities had to be recognized by the school.

It's a state college in New Jersey. This has a lot to do with it. There is a liberal, anti-greek agenda in the administration.

The campus is expanding, and they demolished our frat row for student housing and a shopping center this past year. it's fucked up.

Sure, we had some parties that got a little out of control, but no worse than in the past. lately they have just been cracking down hard, and it's totally biased.

Don't think it's an NPC rule.

Santa Clara University phased out its Greek Life a few years ago, but the NPC groups have been thriving and even added KKG this Fall.

The weird thing about Rowan is that some of the NPCs are recogized and others are not, if I remember correctly.

Are the NPCs at the University of Texas recognized by the university? I thought I remembered that they were not.

some administrators are just jerks

If I recall correctly from my Jersey days, the Rowan "kicked" several NPC chapters off campus and NPC also withdrew the chapters' charters. The disclaimer on their website is more of a warning that nationals (at least in the NPC, don't know about IFC) don't recognize this chapter and niether does the college so join at your own risk.
Like at other colleges in Jersey, and I'm sure other places around the country, chapters that left under, shall we say less than ideal conditions (and I don't mean numbers) have a habit of not dying but rather sticking around. The people "initiated" wear letters frequently but are not official members of the organization. We had quite a few on my campus in my collegian days.
I'm thinking that is the case here, local Panhel doesn't recognize the chapter, EO doesn't recognize the chapter, and the college doesn't recognize the chapter, but there are woman going around calling themselves XYZ.

It appears from the DKE national website that the chapter at Rowan is recognized by DKE. Same for Theta Chi. Kappa Sigma does not list a chapter at Rowan, and Phi Kappa Sigma lists their Rowan chapter as "inactive."

This is not an active chapter of DZ. Sounds like the group that was a chapter of DZ at St Johns in NY from about 20 years back who would not "cease and desist" when asked by DZ and just kept on using the name and recruiting as such. They eventually went away.

Most (if not all) of the Canadian Universities do not recognize fraternities or sororities because they are single gender organizations with selective membership. They only recognize organizations that do not discriminate and have open membership. The administration does not attempt to get rid of the Greeks either though. There are a lot of NPC chapters in Canada in spite of this.

Seems like they could just go local and use other letters. I mean thats what my orginization did when our National went under (Phi Sigma Epsilon). We go by Phi Sigma Chi these days, and a lot of the other Phi Sig chapters did something a long the lines of what we did. Some of the local chapters who were formally PSE formed a national which is now the Phi Sigma Phi Orginization. Our local is considering going National with them in time.

You mean when Phi Sigma Epsilon merged with Phi Sigma Kappa in 1985?
