~~Attention All Members of BGLO!!~~
Recently on several college campuses, the BGLO had a Forum for all Non-Greek Members to come out an openly address some of the "issues" they have with us. Some responses were very very eyeopening and the convo got a tad heated at times..I decided to bring some of the issues at our forum here on Greek Chat for several of the non-greeks that were present at the forum are mysteriously online..hmmm..
Anywho, One young lady dressed apparently in the colors of XYZ sorority wanted to know why the members ignored her when she came up to talk to them more about how to get into their organization..(she called them stuck up for ignoring her)..This young lady told the panel she did everything she could including wearing the sorority colors almost everyday..(lol)..the XYZ sorority is going to start their MIP very soon..I wonder will she get in? (sarcasm)--On Greek Chat Another young lady voiced her opinion and stated that if the XYZ sorority would act more friendly when interested members approach them then that would increase NPHCs members drastically. She stated to "treat others how one would want to be treated"--On Greek Chat A male and or female(The person stated themselves as SheMale(HONEST) wanted to know why BGLO seem to discriminate against homosexuals, transvestites, and open hermaphrodites. This person also stated that "I got legal rights to sue my way into XYZ Fraternity so yall best let me in and stop discriminatin" --On Greek Chat A male wanted to know "how are non-greeks supposed to know what they are getting into if yall keep everything sooo secret? Im asking for a Handbook or something b/c its not fair how other councils have specific instructions and yall dont." "And don't give me that go to the website *ish because it is NO info there and how to join and what to expect in the process."--On Greek Chat A female was "scared to pledge because I dont wanna get any wood". She also proceded to state how disgusted she was that "people paddle other people just for mere enjoyment" and when one reports this kind of incident, they are "shunned upon by the organization and blackballed"- Also On Greek Chat **Just thought I would share what several non-greeks have to say** I was slightly offended but it is enlightening nonetheless |
I hope they got civil answers, especially the first one that is a policy issue.

If so, hmmm.... |
Do you guys think that people who are interested in BGLO carry a certain level of knowlegd regarding black greek life based on their exposure to it? I believe this experience is relative of course, but I just feel like some of the information that I know in regards to this matter is because of my environment (I attend Howard) versus friends that I know who go to other colleges who have less of a greek life.
Most of this stuff seems like common knowledge to a any BGLO member and others who are surrounded by it, but it might take a lot more for someone else to get it. It's easy to huff and puff and give the "do your research" command, but at first glance im pretty sure alot of ppl are gonna ask questions that they dont see anything wrong with asking. If you have been in XYZ for 15 years, im sure you are TIRED of hearing these same questiong, but if I'm a freshman in college who has just witnessed a probate, should you really bark on me for asking certain questions? |
i apologize, i just noticed this thread may not have been for non-greeks to respond. Just to clarify, i am not a member of any BGLO.

Yes this means they are. We weren't going to let them off that easy with talking all that mess and leaving without any knowledge of knowing who they were! We asked them to fill out a short survey with one of the questions being... Are you apart of a social Greek network or forum as a guest/member? If so, check all boxes that apply...And GreekChat was one of the ones checked:cool: |

lemme know if im not making sense because i tend to talk in circles...:o |
[quote=humbleme;1745820]Yea, you are right. But i dont think it is safe to assume that people who are interested in a BGLO, or people who visit/post in BGLO forums are actually trying to PURSUE an organization. Some people are just curious and want to know what all the hooplah is about. Now if you are ACTIVELY PURSUING membership into an organization and have been steered in the right direction, then there should be no excuses. Yea some of the things posted were kinda ignorant, but honestly, it is understandable for some college students (freshman, tranfers from other schools who havent heard of any greek org) to wonder why wearing a certain org's colors is a big deal. It's one thing for an org to peak your interest, but i think its a whole 'nother story when you begin pursuing. Like i said, i might just be interested outta curiousity, but not that interested where im begging for admittance.
Yes however, when I mentioned there was a short survey earlier, One of the questions also asked if the participants were interested in becoming a member of a BGLO. In contrast, the question of Had their mind been set on one particular organization was also a part of the survey. Excuse me for not saying that earlier. I believe whether peaking of pursuing, at least SOME information should be researched to keep oneself from uttering statements such as the ones from these participants. |
^^^oh ok. I guess that makes sense...

Our policies forbid convos about MIP, but the prospects don't know that. So they do their "research" by going to MBs and reading books. And unless I am mistaken the books do not say don't wear the colors of the org in which you are interested. In fact none of DST's tools say that. And very honestly my first inclination would be to show my interest by wearing the colors (in fact I did.) ETA: I already fear for the future of our orgs based on some folx in them now. |
I agree
