new chapter at northeastern university?

so i'm a new member of kappa delta, the newest chapter at northeastern university. i LOVE being a KD, but i'm very intrigued by the amount of hostility toward us just because we're new. i've heard rumors that ANOTHER chapter is colonizing here in the spring, and i'm interested to know if this is actually true and which chapter it will be--partly to get the attention off of us and partly because i'm so excited greek life is growing here. and i promise i won't be anything less than welcoming to them, btw :-)

I haven't heard of a new chapter colonizing at Northeastern in the Spring, and it's a little late for the process to be completed for the chapter to colonize in Jan/Feb.

Keep maintaining the positive attitude, maybe the campus Greek system is just experiencing some growing pains right now. After your first formal recruitment with the other sororities, KD will no longer be the new group.

Don't worry about the hostility. It means that the other groups are afraid of the extra competition! It's amazing how much time some women spend trying to make themselves look better by making others look bad. It's pretty sad. I hope you continue to enjoy your time as a KD collegian.

Just something to point out, is that just because there are rumors of a new chapter coming to campus does not mean that it's actually going to happen. You'd know if it were happening because your Panhellenic Council would have to vote to approve the expansion.

The more the better

There will potentially be a new chapter on campus!

NEU's Greek system is growing extremely fast with so many girls wanting to be involved. Quota has more than doubled since where we were a few years ago! Right now, the problem is that one sorority is far bigger than the rest after taking considerable quota additions.

The reason we have not gone forward with expansion is because panhel is still in the process of deciding whether to bring a new sorority on campus or just raise total. If we decide to raise total to match the larger sorority. If that happens, than all of the other chapters will be holding spring recruitment.

Hope this helps!

Oh, and btw, where are you getting hostility from? As far as I know, none of the sororities harbor any bad feelings towards you. In fact, most of us are very impressed with how well KD did with recruitment!

The general consensus may be positive in the Greek Community regarding new chapters, but trust me, the new chapters ALWAYS get crap for being new. Check out posts on that "other" website....there are a lot of posts that say new chapters take nothing but leftovers, aren't real chapters and numerous other, inaccurate statements. Individual Greeks often aren't as accepting as the general community. Maybe that is where the OP gets a feeling of some hostility on campus.

Yeah, and they will get on that until they win: intramurals, recognition from opposite sex greek system, and/or greek week. It sucks but that is how it is. We weren't a "real fraternity" until we won President's Cup, some sports and the Best Mixer Award from local PHC. Then we were "elitist snobs." You really can't win with some people.

My impression of Northeastern, when I was at BU (1999-2003), was that the Greek orgs there were overall a welcoming group. I don't know if that has changed in the last 5 years or so, but this experience seems against everything I've heard about the system.

nicolee103 11-03-2008 05:11 PM

i guess i shouldnt say hostility, but it's obvious that *some* of the other chapters feel we need to *earn our place.* but hey, we did well during homecoming so i guess we are *earning our place* :-)

nicolee103 11-03-2008 05:13 PM

and as pathetic as it sounds, and i know i shouldnt even look, but that "other site" contributes to the feeling of "hostility." i know there are slanderous things about all chapters, but it is offensive. i vote to ban juicy campus ;-)

bostongreek 11-03-2008 05:47 PM

yeah, don't pay attention to juicycampus. i really don't think that most of the sorority bashing posts are by girls in sororities. and if they are, then it's individuals and not entire chapters.
