USF and UNF info
My daughter is applying/has applied to colleges--what an exciting time!!
My husband and I both graduated Auburn--and both were very active in our sororities/fraternities. We have such great memories!!! Although she is applying to Auburn-she really wants to stay in state (which is Florida). We know a lot about the GREEk system at UF and FSU, but she is also applying to USF and UNF. (we live in Orlando-and we want her to go away for college--so she is not applying to UCF.) She has visited USF and will visit UNF--she asked about the greek system--but was not given much info. From what I can tell the sororities are MUCH smaller that what they were at Auburn--but growing. I do not want to know about specific sororities--just how active the greek system is there. Any info would be GREATLY appreciated!!!! :) |
Out of the sororities in the divine 9, the sigma gamma rhos are the only active ones still active. The others are suspended. I hear that AKAs and the Deltas are able to apply for reinstatement in 2009. I hope that helps.

This thread has some info for Florida schools in general:

Auburn, UF, and FSU are all older campuses that have had Greek systems for quite sometime. As a result, they are quite a bit larger than other campuses such as UNF, USF, and UCF.
I am suprised that USF and UNF did not give you a lot of information on Greek Life. Greek Life is quite large at USF; they have a Greek Row and eight Panhellenic sororities While UNF is the smallest of the colleges you mentioned, they do have a thriving Greek life and campus. I graduated last year, and from the emails and reports from friends that I get, there is a new building being added all the time! There are no houses currently, but they will be built within the next few years. There are five Panhellenic sororities at UNF, Theta being the newest. There is talk, though nothing official, of another sorority being asked to expand in the next year or so, given the large numbers of PNMS. If you have any specific questions about UNF, please feel free to pm me! |
thetagirl218 gave you great answers. providing daughter is offered admission to all those colleges, she will have to decide if greek housing is important to her(none at unf, small(but cute!) housing at usf, suite/dorms at auburn and traditional sorority houses at fsu and uf.

Thank you for your responses-they were very helpful.
Yes--I am interested in the NPA sororities and wanted to know how active the sorotiies are at these campus--What is the average size of the sororities?--I would think since there is a smaller number of sororities at these campus--there would not be as much competition. If you know what was quota at each school? and do most pledge (receive a bid) that wnat to join. At Auburn this is not the case--many horror stories on here in the recruitment stories. at USF 6% of the female students are members of sororities and at UNF 7%-- compared to 31% at Auburn. I know this may sound like I am comparing "apples to oranges" since Auburn's greek system has been around for a long time--but I know what a big part of the campus the greek system was. I would appreciate any other input. :) |
smiley21 is an alum of UNF. She would probably have some good advice.

Hey Thetamom, I don't have any info on the schools you asked about, but just wanted to say good luck to your daughter! My father-in-law went Delta Chi at and graduated from Auburn, so there's our six-degrees-of-separation connection. :)

i would say that average chapter size at fsu and uf is around 150-member range. everyone pledged quota at fsu-i cannot remember the figures, but you can look that up in the recruitment forum-irishpipes does a spectacular thread on quota figures by state, then by school. it is entitled "NPC Recruitment Fall 2008-Spring 2009".
daughter will need recs. at FSU, UF and Auburn. they are not as critical at USF or UNF, but would help her stand out. |

Id say 90-95% of the women that attend pref parties and list all sororities on their bid cards get a bid, so the vast majority end up happy. No recs needed. Each sorority has at least 1-2 philanthropy events a year that collectively raise around $40,000. We also participate in USF community events twice a year. Greek unity is really good here..we get involved with the NPHC and UGC quite often. If you have any other questions, shoot me a PM (private message) on here. Good luck to your daughter. |
Panhellenic chapter total at UNF is 100. Greek Housing is being discussed, but the details are not yet finalized. Greek Life is the largest organization on campus, with lots of opportunity to meet people and get involved in other campus activites.
