Joe McCain calls 911 about traffic

Excerpts from calls made by Joe McCain, younger brother of GOP presidential candidate John McCain, made to 911 and the Alexandria Police after he got stuck in traffic.

McCain called 911 to figure out why he was stuck in traffic near I-495's Wilson Bridge.

Operator: 911, state your emergency.

Joe McCain: Well, it's not an emergency, but do you know why on one side at the damn drawbridge of 95 traffic is stopped for 15 minutes and yet traffic's coming the other way?

Operator: Sir, are you calling 911 to complain about traffic?

McCain uttered an expletive and hung up the phone.

___

He then called the Alexandria police to ask about the traffic.

Alexandria police: Did you just call 911 in reference to this? 911 is used for emergencies only, not because you're just sitting in traffic.

Joe McCain: This isn't traffic. This is a pretty serious malfunction. ... Do we just sit here indefinitely while this bridge malfunctions?

Alexandria police: Honestly, sir, we have no control over the bridge. ... Maybe you can contact VDOT (Virginia Department of Transportation) or the Maryland Department of Transportation.

Ummmm....traffic on 495 has been like this for years....especially near the bridge.

I don't know what's scarier, that this is John's younger brother or that he also lives in this area....heh!

Anybody remember Billy Carter......?

That's it - last straw, I'm no longer voting for McCain because his brother called 911 about traffic.

Seriously though - it will be good when this election is over so that the media stops reporting these inane stories.

I just looked at this as the McCains continuing the tradition of presidential siblings that the president/candidate wishes would just keep quiet.

That was the very first thing I thought of, too! Did you ever hear the quote that Jimmy Carter's mother made? The venerable Miss Lillian said, "When I look at my four children sometimes I say to myself, Lillian, you should have stayed a virgin." I bet that earned a big, "Thanks for nothing, Mom."

ETA: I read more of Miss Lillian's write up in Wikipedia: "When son Billy Carter's beer business had its ribbon cutting ceremony, a friend questioned Miss Lillian on whether or not she would attend. She remarked: "I attended Jimmy's inauguration didn't I?"

On the day of Jimmy's inauguration, Miss Lillian was asked if she was proud of her son and she asked blandly, Which one?"

Half-brother Roger was a musician and actor.

He was Mayor Bubba in Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings.

Who the hell thinks this is news? People in this area (and other areas) do stupid stuff like this all the time.

Joe's not running, so what makes this worth publishing or reading?

Two things: McCain and the election. This isn't news at all. But those two things (i guess) make it Primetime news! j/k

RU OX Alum 10-28-2008 11:54 AM

wow, if you call 911 for a traffic jam you should probably face some kind of penalty. Those lines need to be kept open for emergencies.
