Starting a New Chapter
 

I am currently a first year student at a small, private, Christian liberal arts college, at which there is only one fraternity. I was wondering if anyone had any information on how my friends and I could go about starting a chapter of a national fraternity at our school.

Usually, the best way is to start a "fraternal organization"' of your own on the campus. Call it whatever you want, "The Roundtable Group", "The Rennaisance Men", whatever. Bring in men to the group, study together, do community service together, make up Tshirts with your group name on it, meet once a week and talk as men do. ::p Then once you have the group established, try to see if a Natl org will sponsor you as a colony. Try some of your member's fathers or alumni who are proffessors on the campus for potential contact ideas.

Also factor in the amount of national fraternity alumni there are in the area of your school. The headquarters of a national fraternity is much more likely to want to colonize at your school if they have enough fraternity alumni in the area to help out in the beginning processes.

When I started a local , this was befor there were any members and wrote letters to @ 8 Nationals and was turned down by all. I recruited men who were not happy with the on campus Fraternitys, wanted to build something of their own, or were black balled from those same Fraternitys. We had no help from the school and were going up against a small national at the same time. With the help of All of the Fraternitys we were chosen as the one to come on campus!
We had visits by 2 nationals and chose LXA and were colonized at the end of the school year. Almost unheard of but felt very lucky in the fact!
It is very hard work and the rewards are many! Go for it! If you have only one, it may be easier for you as there are men who who will be interested in joining and working hard to get it going!

I just wanted to thank you guys for your input on this topic. This is something that my friends and I are really interested in, and hearing your enthusiasm for the subject has strengthened that interest. Thanks.

We look for an "interest group" which is nothing more than you and several of your freinds of like mind. Then we either proactively, or reactively, go after these interest groups to become colonies of Kappa Sigma.

FYI, we want our colonies to have at LEAST, a number of members equal to the average of other fraternities on campus. We provide volunteer and staff resources to help with recruitment and colonization to help you get there.

with some of you who have been starting your own frat or sorority on campus i clap your efforts. It's something that most people don't want to take the time to do because of the hassle you may endure or the time that is being put into the orginizations your trying to see prosper. For myself i know how it feels to be one of those people trying to better the campus comunity by bringing a new frat or soror on board, but i'm here to let you know i feel you pain your time and the struggle that you may encounter on your journey, but hang tuff have a back up plan, and supportive people on your side and you will see that it was worth it all. I'm a founding member of Mu Omega Pi alpha chapter at Olivet College. I'm also a Alumi of the school but my brothers are still taking care of business and that's a good thing.
