Greek Culture Class

Sorry, the title makes it seem like I'm asking how to say something in Greek or something, but I was just letting y'all know that the University of Arkansas is offering a class next semester called something (paraphrased, because I don't have the long name in front of me) African American Communication: The Culture and Communication of African American Sororities and Fraternities.

If I didn't have prior obligations, I would so be down for going to it. It should be interesting.

Does anybody else have a similar class at their Universities? It counts as a Comm/African American studies class.

Sounds like an interesting class...just another reason I would love to live in a college town and be able to audit a class occasionally.

sounds interesting. I did a content analysis of fraternity and sorority magazines for my capstone senior seminar sociology course. It was pretty interesting to look at the difference between the NPHC orgs and the NPC/NIC orgs I chose, and then how the fraternities differed from the sororities.

while it sounds mega interesting, does it really need to be a full semester class? Really Arkansas, really?

I dont diminish anything NPHC related and its relevance, but a class? i dont know. sounds like a gimmicky "easy A" class. and whoever is teaching it, props to them i suppose, but is this in an attempt to get field research for a dissertation?

^^^ Agreed. 15 weeks? 30 sessions at 75 minutes each, I assume?

Class #1: The Longest A Phi Ever
Class #2: The Longest 06 Ever
Class #3: The Youngest 08 Ever
Class #4: The Longest Oh Yeah Ever

And so on.

Actually, I think this could be quite a class if you tie it into African/African American history, culture, and tradition and present theoretical topics like those in Dr. Gregory S. Parks' books (and use these books in the class): African American Fraternities and Sororities: The Legacy and the Vision and the sequel, Black Greek Letter Organizations in the 21st Century: Our Fight Has Just Begun .

I received an email last fall regarding a class at IU called " NPHC, NALFO, NMGC and “Others” -- The Other Greek Letter Organizations." Looking through the syllabus, it looks it was an intresting course. There were several guest speakers brought in from organizations in each council.

ETA: It looks like the class is a "Special Topics In Education" course, so it's only 8 weeks long. I'm not sure how this could be stretched out to a full semester.

Agreed. I took a lot of non-standard classes as an undergrad; I could definitely see some of my past professors teaching this kind of course. If you can spend an entire semester on a topic like "Science, Technology, and the Medical History of Sex/Gender", you can definitely spend an entire semester on this topic.

One Alpha says "A Phi"
The rest of the Alphas say "06"
The AKAs say "08"
The Alphas say "Oh yeah!"

And that, gee_ess, is the communication of BGLOs. :)

I am going to have to lay off the evening glass of wine while I cook dinner because this is still not making any sense to me...maybe because I am too old? Maybe because I am not a member of a BGLO?:);) Either way, I am scratching my head and feeling very inadequate.:o

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gpxBAPrVzo <---- listen to the sounds that the people are making. Those are calls. What I described was a call and response series between Alphas and AKAs. :D

The A Phi A says "06" denoting the year that Aphi was founded. The AKA's say "'08" denoting the year they were founded. The Aphi's show their approval by saying "oh yeah".

Senusret was saying that that was African American GLO Communication (as noted by the course description).

You white folks just don't understand.

Thanks for helping a girl out, Senusret I and EW. Now I get it! The youtube video(s) were great. Thank goodness I don't have to give up my happy hours!
