How Old is Too Old to Step?
I used the Search feature, even cross-referencing terms, but didn't find an answer to this particular question/situation.
My sorority, Chi Sigma Kappa, is not a "black" sorority, and is (obviously) not a part of the D9; nor are we campus-based, but we do hope to have collegiate chapters. However, at this point, our membership is primarily black because I just happen to know more black people than white people, and I started recruiting ladies I knew first (as is usually the case in all new organizations). I did not envision D9 traditions, such as stepping (among others), as being a part of XSK. However, a member has indicated that she wants to step. I figured if one person brought it up, more would. My personal opinion is that because XSK is targeted toward nontraditionals, of which the majority will be older, that it isn't going to be cute to see a bunch of pushing-40 (or older) women trying to step. Plus, I think we should leave stepping to the D9, since we aren't D9. But, regardless of my opinion, if enough members express interest in stepping, it's an issue that's going to have to be dealt with. So, my main question is as stated in the subject... How old is too old to step? I know some frats do, but do grad chapters of D9 sororities step? Also, if a chapter wishes to step and there are D9 orgs on campus, should they approach the D9 and express their admiration and interest in the tradition of stepping and ask for help? I have heard of non-ethnic, and ethnic non-D9, chapters doing this and participating in step shows and yard shows with the approval and help of the D9. Would that be the way to go? Thanks, in advance, for your help. :) |
This is a non-issue. Black people don't age. End of discussion.

I'm glad you decided to comment because you helped a lot. :) There really are women 35-40+ years old stepping? Wow. I didn't know! And, I definitely didn't want any older women from my sorority trying to be the first and catching flack. But, if it's something that's common (or becoming more common) then I need to catch a clue and rethink my position... and like I said, if members decide they want to step then it'll happen regardless of what I personally think. I think it's best to leave it up to each individual chapter to decide.
Staying away from the signature steps/moves/chants, etc... okay, will do. That's only right and reasonable even though I don't know what they are, or what a stroll is, and I've never been to a step show. Looks like I'll be spending time on YouTube to try to learn who does what so none of us do it. Thanks rhoyaltempest! Quote:
