Remember those childhood holloween school parties?
 

lol I don't know how many replies this thread will get if any at all, but I had to post this. I know everyone on here remembers the childhood holloween parties you had in grade school. Maybe my school was different, but I doubt it. They were always held on a Friday. Remember when you had to bring something? Candy, cookies, brownies, etc etc? Of course there was always the kid(s) who wouldn't bring anything,:rolleyes: but there was always the kid who would bring something her/his mom made that was totally gross that no one would eat except for that particular kid. Did any of you bring something that no one would eat except you? Do you remember any kids in your homeroom who brought something that no one would eat except her/him? What was it?

When I was in 3rd grade, I remember a girl in my class brought some type of weird foreign food. I think it was some kind of German dessert. She said her mom made it. Anyway, it looked gross so no one ate it except her. When the holloween party was over, there was so much of it left over. She asked if anyone wanted any before she wrapped it back up. Everyone was pretty much like "no thanks" lol then she wrapped it up and took it back home. I think there was like two pieces that were cut from it. As I can remember, she ate both pieces.....oh, I remember seeing a half eaten piece of it on our teacher's plate.:D

I would love to read some more stories.:p

There was this weird bannana pudding stuff that one kid brought in one year. Not Jell-O from the box pudding, but like, home made pudding with huge clumps of bananas and stuff (not vanilla wafers, they used something else weird) and that everyone only ate a little bit of but a few kids loved it.

We watched a movie too.

They did away with them my fourth or fifth grade year though, too much candy and not enough study time. But whatever, we were little kids, who cares if we had candy and didn't study on Halloween. /rant. Anyway, what else was there? Oh, one year we made caramel apples. They were good.

I LOVED H'ween parties. I always made cute cupcakes for my kids classes. I hate the fact that most schools don't do them anymore because it's considered a "devil worship" holiday and if they do anything at all they call it a "Fall Festival". Dressing up and being silly for one day does not make kids into devil worshipers.

I am reposting a blog entry I wrote from when I was a teacher in 2004:



Friday was the big "Fall Festival." Long story short, why did my kids act like a bunch of drunkards at an Irish Pub? We sat our first graders at clusters and left a lot of open space in the middle for our table with the food. We had so much candy it was sickening. SO MUCH! Anyway, so these kids kept toasting each other with little huggies. Pure sugar, water, and food coloring. Possibly some cocaine. But they were too young to understand that you say "cheers" when you toast, so they said:


"TOAST!"


Then, after they got tired of saying "Toast!" they said:

"Happy Halloween!"

then:

"Happy Fall Festival!"

then:

"Happy birthday!"

then finally:

"We love you Ms. ______ and Mr. Darden!"

It was cool....they deserved a nice little party. Most of them are hard workers.

However, the insanity began when they started spontaneously singing and chanting.
That's why I say they became drunkards at an Irish pub. If they knew "Piano Man" by Billy Joel, I'm sure they would have sung it.

Okay, so first they started singing some random kids songs, like maybe the Pinball number song from Sesame Street, which I taught them earlier in the year. And maybe the bumblebee song. Me and my colleague were like "What the hell?" Who spontaneously sings at a party?

THEN...they went from drunken Irish pub to jook joint/church house/gin house. These bamas started singing the chants I taught them earlier in the day. Imagine thirty first graders chanting:

"Ice ice, baby! Too cold, too cold! Ice ice, baby! The black and gold!"

Oh my lordy. What have I done? The only reason we taught them the chant was to kill about ten minutes of time between an assembly and recess. Okay, more like twenty minutes, because we had time to teach them a variation of "All of my love..."

So of course, the next logical step for the little runts, high on sugar, was to spontaneous start singing:

"Alllllll of my looooove....my peace and happiness....I'm gonna give tooo _________ [name of school]"

After the first verse, why did these little bamas start rising to their feet like they were in church? What the hell!!!

THEN, they were swift enough to remember the other part of the chant that we made up, to be chanted at the same time as all of my love is sung:

"First grade! We are the leopards! We're in the first grade! We are the mighty mighty leopards!"

Why did first grade damn near have a probate show? See, this is why greeks don't need to teach, lol.


So anyway, they settled down and enjoyed the five course junk food meal we fed them. It was good though.

Whew.

I remember this one kid brought this desert-type thing. And it LOOKED amazing. This kid's mom created an entire Halloween scene of top of this cake in a pan thing, just out of frosting and candy. It was the coolest thing made out of food I had ever seen.

But... when I ate it, I remember being completely grossed out by it. It was like a carrot cake... except the cake was chocolate. I guess she wanted it to be orange and black. The frosting was ok, but the candy and decorations together on top just made the whole thing awful. A combination of jimmies, caramel, chocolate, black liquorice, candy corn, skittles, etc. was the worst thing I ever tasted.

Nice as a decoration. Bad as a desert.

I loved Halloween celebrations as a kid! The first part of the school day was actually school, but right before recess, we would have a big assembly. Everyone would walk across the stage in their costume (because everyone would come to school dressed up as something lol) and then they would have a costume contest for each grade.

Then after the winners were announced, everyone would go back to their homeroom and gouge themselves on junk food people brought (cupcakes, sandwiches, finger food,etc.). I don't remember any food being crappy, but hey - this was the south so you know it was probably good.lol

Then there was recess and we would leave to go home early. I don't know if they still do that (I doubt it) but I LIVED for that day. In second grade, I won the contest when I came to school dressed as Snow White. :D I think I still have that trophy somewhere.lol

I don't remember any of the food but I do remember wearing a clown costume that my mom made out of uuuuugly floral curtains, complete with big sunglasses, red nose, and red polka-dot tie that was so long I tripped on it all day.

I damn near spit Butterfinger on the keyboard reading that. Oh, how funny!

We used to have a Halloween Carnival at my elementary school, and it was the highlight of the year. One year, while wearing my beautiful blue satin princess costume with silver sparkles, I won a cake at the Cake Walk! It was some kind of citrus bundt cake and it was frosted yellow on one half orange on the other. I was so proud, though when my mom picked me up she wasn't quite as thrilled.

I remember when I was a kid, someone brought a fruit cake. I didn't know who brought it. In fact, no one would fess up to it. When the part was over it was still there, and it wasn't even touched. I'm not a big fan of fruit cakes.
