Omega Prep
 

I'm a high school junior and I was wondering how can i get Omega Prep started at my school. We have two groups for females and one group(K.L.I) for the males. I do not want to join K.L.I, but I want to be in a high school organization that means something. Also, when i go to college, I want to pledge Omega. Some folks saw that i don't need to worry about that, and i need to focus on my grades and etc. But I'm focused and ready! Does anyone have any tips for "hopefully" an up-and-coming Que? Any information is helpfull.

You have two different issues here: the desire to be in a youth program and a desire to be an Omega. I can only address the first as I am not an Omega.

First and foremost, it sounds as though you are looking to be involved in a development program for young men and you're not interested in the Kappa League. That's fine.

But what you have to realize is that joining a youth program is NOT a stepping stone to pledging in college. Plenty of boys in my Beautillion become Alphas, but several have pledged Kappa. We're fine with that because at least they went to college and made something of themselves.

As a Junior in high school, you might already know what you want and who you'd prefer to be mentored by. You google "Omega Psi Phi" and then your home town, in two separate sets of quotes like this: "Omega Psi Phi""Pine Bluff". Look for websites of the alumni/graduate chapters nearby. Email them. Call them. Tell them you'd like to participate in any youth programs they have.

They might not call it Omega Prep. It may be something else entirely.

But be mindful that your aim should be to join a program which helps you to be a better person through academics, service, and learning how to be a gentleman.

If you just join a club to be close to Omegas, or wear shirts, or step, you're doing yourself a disservice.

Thanks. I'm not trying to join Omega Prep to be close to Omega, but because I really want to be in a program that means something. Most programs at my school are just there to look try to good. They do NO community service or anything like that. And if I can some way get this program started at my school, I will know that I am helping a lot of young men in my community. The colors, stepping, etc are just a plus to everything, they're not the reason I want to join. Also, I will be in the Beautillion. I have signed up and now I have to attend the meeting. It's something i've been wanting to be apart of since I was little. But, again, Thanks.

Random question, since we don't know where you live (and it's better that we don't).... who sponsors the Beautillion where you live?

In DC, Alphas typically sponsor the Beautillion, but I have seen communities where the Links, Sigmas, Kappas, and AKAs will also sponsor them.

The Orchid Club sponsors the Beautillion in my community. They may be part of another club. I have a question for you. Which fraternity are you a member of?

lol. i thought as much. i talked 2 an older omega membere tonight and he said that these high schol programs are not in their constitution. and then i talked 2 another omega at my school (we have lik 4-7 of them) and he said he was thinking about starting Omega Prep after football season. thanks 4 all.

Just to add, if you want to be in an organization to do community service, I am sure that your high school has several that are not necessarily greek-related. If not, perhaps you can help to start one; then you can be in on the ground floor and make sure that this club "means something."

In my community, we really dont. The closest thing we have is SGA might do something and JROTC does something. Im part of both. Thats why i want to help bring in something new and something that i know some student would want 2 b part of. It's not only me, but some more males at my school who would like to be in a similar program. Like I said before, the stepping, and affiliation with Omega Psi Phi is all a plus. its not the reason i want 2 join.

So you might really consider starting an organization that does community service, because it sound like there is a niche to fill. You don't have to wait for an Omega Prep program to be established, you can do that now. If you decide to do so make sure to talk to people at your school, so that you go through all of the appropriate channels.

As a member of Groove Phi Groove here in Charlotte our Mentorship program is through the Boy Scouts of America and unlike the other Orgs where they meet once a month we meet weekly and we do an offsite activity once a month a we pay for the majority of their events. They participate at JCSU UNCC and Livingstone and they go on a trip for an entire week in the summer. I myself was in Kappa League South Surburban in HS and did not go that way because of what I was exposed to once I came to college in 92'. So don't be so "gung ho" about pledging an Org. or wanting to be in the "family"...the best works that you can do is an individual. Best believe the real work comes after you pledge...hell that's the easy part. Right now you're seeing the outside of the Frat...the view changes once you're on the inside young man.
