Does your school include non-NPCs in the first round of rush?
The question is whether your schools include NPHC, NALFO, and independent sororities in the first round of recruitment in order to introduce themselves to the registrants.
I've mentioned before that when my mother was in college, her NPHC sorority rushed right alongside NPCs, but in retrospect, I'm pretty sure it was "structured informal" of some sort. (But she did get a bid from Delta Zeta in the process.) |
Back in the dark ages at the University of Arkansas (fall 1979, to be exact) the NPHC groups took part in open house round. I remember that all of the groups (and I don't remember how many there were at the time, four maybe?) were present in a room in the student union. There was a brief presentation/explanation of their orgs and then each did a step routine - something I had never seen before but really enjoyed.
Then, after round one, I never saw or heard anything about the NPHC again other than spotting girls on campus in their letters. I think that the campus is a much more "integrated" Greek campus today with more cooperation and interaction among all groups. One of the large campus events is the annual step show which all NPC groups participate in. However, the NPHC groups are not, currently, involved with NPC recruitment. |
My last year of college we had a Greek Open House. All the Greek orgs were invited to attend. I don't quite remember if Alpha Phi Alpha or Alpha Kappa Alpha joined in. But as far as recruitment, they did their own thing.

I'll be honest, I didn't know that wasn't the case on all campuses until I got on GC. Our AKA chapter went through the first round of recruitment with us-then they did their own thing. They also had an equal vote in Panhellenic Council-even when they were down to 2 members. I don't remember an NPHC orgs participating in Greek Week, but they did invite all NPC and IFC chapters to their annual step show. I was also encouraged to meet NPHC members during my pledging period. This was in 1992.

Although Greek Life at my school hosts several "all Greek" events (barbecues, meet and greets, etc) at the beginning of the school year, each council has separate recruitment activities. NPC has formal recruitment, NPHC has "Meet the Greeks" and programming, and MGC has an MGC Mixer.
|
My school has both local and national houses but, when it comes to rush, both go through the exact same process, and are treated the same way by the school. There is basically no distinction made during rush.

I believe the local sorority at my school has participated in the first round of recruitment, but the NPHCs have never done so.

In the past (like when I was a freshman & sophomore) formal recruitment included both NPCs, 2 Latina orgs (i believe they are members of NALFO, but not sure), and a local.
At the time, the sororities were all under the "Inter Sorority Council" but around '06, it changed. We got a new Greek Life Advisor and she created the Panhellenic Council, so only the NPCs participated in formal recruitment. A LOT more girls came out to recruitment when all the orgs were participating though. |
An engineering sorority participates in first round at Ohio State, but the NPHC, Latino and Asian chapters do not. BTW... OSU- NPCs are on deferred recruitment; first quarter freshmen cannot pledge until second quarter. The others can recruit first quarter freshmen.

At my university, we have an all greek bbq where pnm's can meet all the fraternities on campus, but then PHC and IFC do their own recruitment and the groups in MGC each do their own recruitment. I wish our school was different.
