Juicycampus/Greekchat person

You know who you are. Youre on this website and you act like you dont talk about people and then you reply to ever thread on the UCSB section on juicycampus with all of your anonymous rumors. Stop pretending that you're actually a nice person.

Call em out!!!!

gee_ess 09-28-2008 09:56 PM

Juicy Campus is the most horrible thing I have ever seen. I cannot believe it is allowed to continue.

Yes, free speech is terrible!

It's a stupid website that turns college into high school but it's whatever.

gee_ess 09-29-2008 08:25 AM

I really don't want to argue the intricacies of free speech but there are degrees of abuse...i.e. walking into a theater and falsely yelling Fire! is one of them. Anyone who has seen this website knows it crosses the line.

How? It's random gossip from random internet people. Anyone who takes it seriously probably has more problems than just visiting juicy campus.

Kevin 09-29-2008 10:37 AM

This is worse than terrorism.

This is the 9-11 of the internet.

I will remember where I was and what I was doing the moment I read the OP.

We're doomed.

I disagree. Rumor, gossip, and lies can be extremely hurtful and damaging. It is no different than whispered lies and obscene writings on bathroom walls. It may or may not be true, but it does put doubt and cast a shadow on someone's reputation. But the real concern, imo, is that there is no option or action that can be taken by anyone who feels they have been maligned on this site.

Reputation is everything in this world - to make a point: the many comments and advice given about recruitment that pertain to reputation. If employers and grad school administrators are looking at Facebook, etc to check up on applicants, who's to say that something said on Juicy Campus won't be considered in that process?

And all you have to do is ask a college student about Juicy and they will tell you what a factor it is on their campus...

Sorry for the hijack, OP. I have no idea who or what you are referring to. I just feel very strongly about this site.

Lol and that`s completely illegal, btw. I hear Juicy Campus is being sued as well. It is offensive, I completely agree, but hey, some people are immature.

PhiMu_Lindz 10-01-2008 02:00 AM

yea.. its a ridiculous site. My campus (American) just got added a few days ago... and there is already 4 pages of stuff, mostly about different greek organizations. it just creates bad reputations for everyone...

gee_ess 10-01-2008 08:51 AM

If you really want to be shocked - read their Terms and Agreements on the website that expressly explains their position on anything posted online.

People are definitely immature but this site is so much more...there have been incidents of students being placed on suicide watch over stuff posted online. And after the big court case where the mother was sued for posting lies on Facebook or Myspace about her daughter's friend which led to her suicide, I would think this site would cause as much moral outrage.

People ignore it at Arkansas.

KSUViolet06 10-01-2008 12:48 PM

My school just got this, and really, nobody really uses it. You can tell that the only people who post on it are freshman morons who are just looking for HS-type drama, which is hard to stir up on a campus of 26,000 students.

Unregistered- 10-01-2008 03:15 PM

Dammit...who's the JuicyCampus/Greekchat person obsessed with UCSB? SPILL!

My campus was just added and so far only 9 posts. One of them's from a Kappa Sig. Classy.

epchick 10-01-2008 03:41 PM

So both schools I went to are on JuicyCampus, but there is no "gossip." Nothing, nada, zip. Should I be sad? lol

KSigkid 10-01-2008 04:10 PM

I think I remember reading that my undergrad banned it - I wasn't sure what it was so I didn't pay much attention.

I would have to disagree with that. Penn State has about 40,000 students and it seems as though they had things to say and stir up when I looked at it. It's pretty pathetic that people go to these lengths to make others look bad....I don't get it.

I don't think that is entirely the case...but it should be.

I dont want to give out any links because when I replied to them it was not my finest hour, even though its completely anonymous you would knot it was me...anyway I know their on here and they go to UCSB and theyre greek, so that narrows it down somewhat.

What about reposting the recruitment stories? Same person?

Yes this is what I was referring to, nice try cracker barrel

Did you call me Cracker Barrel?

Or were you saying the person on it was Cracker Barrel? I don't think he goes to UCSB.

Yesterday, Cracker Barrel posted a comment with the post that jonnydrillbit supposedly wrote on juicycampus. It was deleted here though.

agzg 10-02-2008 12:23 PM

Wow I'm slow today. I was going to get offended because I thought it was fairly obvious that Cracker Barrel and I were different people...

33girl 10-02-2008 12:24 PM

quite frankly, since they redid the site, I find it impossible to navigate or find anything on.

What the hell was that other site that was kind of like this (i.e. people could post campus gossip & other stuff) that was around a few years ago? All I can think of is deadspin and obvi that's not it. It had 2 columns down the sides and a big section in the middle.

Would you really want to work for an employer who resorts to checking you out on something as insidious as Juicy Campus? I can see why an employer would want to check you out on Facebook or MySpace because the information on those sites is actually provided by you. The information on Juicy Campus is provided by immature cowards who choose not to reveal themselves while posting innuendo and false gossip.

In case you haven't visited JuicyCampus, I will reproduce all posts from the site below with the responses that deal with Greek Life:

So like, who's the hottest frats on campus?

-We are.
-No, we are. And you are not.
-Nuh uh.

This chick is a whore.

-Totally a whore.
-You're a whore.
-I'm a whore.

Who's the top fratz on campus?

-We are.
-Frats all suck.
-We party hard.
-You guys suck now.

Who's the top sororities on campus?

-We are.
-You suck.
-Those girls are whores who do coke.
-You are fat.

That's the entire site. No more mystery. As I advised my undergrads, completely ignore it. Or, post hundreds upon hundreds of times - each post full of hilarious nonsense to make the site worthless in its pitiful aim.

That's the entire site.

Basically.

You forgot some though:

*This girl gave me *insert STD here*

-No she didn't, she's a saint.
-So what who cares?
-Hellz yeah she gave me *insert STD here* too.

*I'm rushing at my school. We have ABC, XYZ, and DEF. Which one should I not join?

-ABC because they are all fat hoez.
-DEF because they do coke.
-XYZ because they're all stuck up bitches.
-None, greeks like totally suck

Repeat the following statements using different combos of dude, chick, slut, whore, STD, sorority, fraternity, drugs, fat, bitches. You get the idea.

33girl 10-02-2008 06:13 PM

You forgot:

-XYZ has an awesome pledge class this year!
-OMG XYZ STOP WRITING THINGS ABOUT YOURSELF EVERYONE KNOWS IT IS A LIE.

Oh, and there's also a fair amount of gay bashing (in the sense of if someone wants to label a fraternity "bad" they say they're all gay) and racism.

I honestly feel like someone read my posts on here about which group had the most fireplaces and thought I was serious, and then took it and ran with it.

nittanyalum 10-02-2008 06:21 PM

Teh intarwebs are so evil. :(

true_blue 10-03-2008 08:23 AM

Hate is a horrible thing

This site has caused so much heart ache on my campus with the exact kind of posts listed above. I try to get everyone to ignore the site, but they still visit it to see if anyone has said bad things about them.

Everyone wants to be liked and feel safe in their chosen environments, and this site undermines those feelings for the ones who are called out and others who wonder if they will be next on the chopping block.

It is a shame that cyber-bullying like this can continue. It is hate-filled and caustic, causing greeks to not trust each other.

We can not afford to let sites like these undermine years of positive relations with our universities and other greek orgs.

Encourage everyone you know to boycott the site, and all that will be left will be the petty, hate-filled bullies.

Thanks for reading my two cents!

You have obviously been on some of the more boring sections. And I assure you that is not the entire sum of posts regarding Greek life. The whole site focuses on Greek life - which school section did you look at?

How about the detailed and graphic descriptions of what jane Doe (insert her real name) supposedly did one night at the XYZ house on the ABC campus? Then, be sure to read the detailed comments on that post that further defame her character.
There are also accusations of rape - which name all participants, especially the fraternity and the girl involved.

I read with interest the opposition to tv shows like Greek, etc because of the damage they do to the reputation of Greeks in general, but am surprised that some of you dismiss this site as lies and gossip. I do not think in a small community(and no matter how big the campus, Greek life is a small community of people) anyone wants their name dragged through the mud in any capacity. Beyond the damage to individuals, this site does more to perpetuate negative Greek stereotypes than any book or movie or tv show.

I agree that it is filled with half-truths, blatant lies, etc, but no matter the degree of truth or lack thereof, this type of stuff is wrong and I think that someone who is maligned on the site should have some sort of recourse - which they do not. That has been my beef all along. That someone whose character has been impugned has no way to make it right. At least if someone writes a lie on a bathroom wall, it can be painted over or washed off...

Elephant Walk 10-03-2008 11:41 AM

While that's probably all true, no one actually pays attention to Juicy except for people who don't matter.

Well its actually very bad taste to verbally admit to reading it, and Ive never heard anyone verbally admit to writing anything, even though there are people I know who have done it. Nobody wants to admit it.

Obviously there are people who use this website who also post on JC, mainly that sorority girl from UCSB among many others I assume.
