What's your big thing(s)?
A lot of Chapters at a lot of Schools have one (or more) big programs that are really associated with them . . .
Here at this campus: Alpha Gamma Delta does Mr. Sweetheart every year . . . Delta Zeta Does their annual Lip Synch Show. Zeta Tau Alpha does Zeta Search for the Stars. Sigma Sigma Sigma does Greek Goddess. The guys really don't do anything . . . So what are the big programs you do on your campus and what are they about? Or the big programs that others do? Maybe it will give us some ideas about events we can do at different campuses . . . |
We do the greek olympics and we have a spinoff of mr. greek week and mrs. greek week, which are in a sense decathlons involving greek games. It's pretty kewl and we do it every semester. and when we can, we try to get as many of the greek orgs to pitch in and donate and help sponsor something with the campus, like a Thanksgiving food drive, or something in a similar sense. I really like what the TKEs do here. They have their own food drive for Thanksgiving and for 100 hours straight, they have at least one member sitting on the top of their house, and it's all decorated and lit up with crazy looking lights and stuff. It's awesome, we'd do something like that, but you can sit on the top of our roof because it towers into the sky!

Our school seems to be really big on yearly events...
Fiji has Islander...a huge concert/party- They've had AMAZING bands..Sublime, 311, goldfinger, blink 182 etc. They also have Fiji soccer tournament. Pike has Fight Night (boxing) in spring and their Green Fog party in Fall ATO throws Space Jam every year...basically a huge, space themed black light party Kappa and Theta have a Kite and Key crush party Tri Delt has Poisiden Man, a male beauty pagent Theta Chi has Miss Isla Vista, girls's beauty pagent As for sports, there's Phi-Ball (Alpha phi, volleyball) Pi Phi Bowling, Sigma Nu's Big West Basketball, DG anchor Splash, and Beta softball....Beta also has a Beta Bedrock party. AEPi has Mardi Gras which is HUGE every year, but usually gets shut down by the police. AEphi makes a men of Santa Barbara calendar. Sigma Chi has Derby Days That's all I can think of right now, but I know there's more!! |
My post got deleted when the system crashed. :( Ok, here it is again (these are just the ones I can remember):
ZTA: King of the Campus, Pig Roast, Crown Classic Kappa Sig: Bed Races, Shipwreck, and Hairy Buffalo Kappa Delta: Shamrock SAE: Paddy Murphy and Bullfrog Lambda Chi: Watermelon Bust and Moonbounce Delta Gamma: Anchor Splash Pi Phi: Say What? My school's small, but we still get involved in big ways. Our organizations really pride themselves on philanthopic work, so many of the big events have to do with that.
I'm an AZD, and we have our annual Xi Man competition every year, which is like a male beauty pagent. All donations go to a local food shelter, and you get a discount on admission if you bring a canned good. We also did a Toy Drive this year for local daycares and pre-schools that was sucessful, so I hope we continue to do that every year. We also sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt with Sigma Phi Epsilon every spring and invite area children to participate. The K-Sigs do a See-Saw a Thon in the fall where they ride a huge see-saw in front of the campus for a whole weekend, 24-7. Many other greek organizations help out by riding the see-saw and giving these guys a break. I did this year and it was a blast! All the money they collect goes to St. Judes Children's Hospital. The Zeta's and Sig Kaps started to do a haunted house at Halloween for philanthropy which I think was split between their repective charities. This year they did a haunted hayride and let the K-Sigs join in. Our one local frat, Phi Theta Phi, does the biggest event on our campus by far. They do the Walk-a-Thon every winter and have raised over 1 million dollars for the Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. They walk in the cold from our school to Pittsbugh usually in harsh weather and snow. They've been doing this since the sixties and alumni come back every year and help the guys do the walk. It's a big generator of pride for the guys and our school because they are one of the top contributors of philanthropic work out of all greek organizations in the nation. They just did this year's walk this past weekend, and were hoping to bring in $50,000, but I haven't heard yet how much they collected. I know our other greek organizations do stuff, but I can't think of anything else off the top of my head. |
Many chapters of Delta Phi Epsilon do "Deepher Dude", which is your male beauty pageant thing. It normally is a great fundraiser and makes a lot of chapters a lot of dough for Cystic Fibrosis. Also, all of our chapters participate in and host an ANAD Candlelight Vigil for the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders. It's a big to do :)

I couldn't think of some of the lesser known events that some of the houses hold every year. :) |
At my school everyone's GLO (well pretty much all of them) have an annual "party" on campus. Each year it changes. Some of the GLOs do their annual thing off campus and it has remained the same for years. Yeah uh, I won't get into details about those. ;) But, anyway, Phi Sig's this year is a Western themed party. It's held on campus so it's just a little thing. In past years we have done Mardi Gras..
But, last year we were in charge of Greek God and Goddess. It will be a different GLO though this year. Don't know who yet. |

University of Chicago:
Kappa Alpha Theta has Mr. University Delta Gamma has Anchor Slam AOPi sorta picks through different events and has had a pizza pie eating benefit and put on events like MTV's Singled Out Psi U had Cool legs, Hot buns AEPi had Lascivious Ball Fiji had Islands Other fraternities have parties like graffiti but I think they're just themed parties and not just associated with them at other schools. Alpha Epsilon Pi: Our chapter at Mizzou has the nation's largest single fraternity philanthropy called Rock-a-thon. Our Northwestern chapter has something called Dog Days which involves hot dogs and concerts and a bunch of other fun stuff http://www.dog-days.org/ And our Indiana chapter evidently has some HUGE formal/party called Hollywood I think. I've never been but I've heard the bill for this is through the roof. -Rudey |
The major event we were involved with was the Walk for Hunger, as we volunteered every year I was in school (and are still doing so, to the best of my knowledge). We also threw a Halloween party for a nearby preschool. Those were our two biggest philanthropies, although we did have others.
Lambda Chi always had their canned food drive ZBT had ZBTahiti, although I'm not sure where exactly the proceeds went Chi Phi had a rape prevention program Alpha Phi had Jail N' Bail, which went to the Susan B. Komen fund Gamma Phi Beta had a lip sync contest during Greek Week; I'm unsure of who those proceeds went to. Those are all I can think of right now. |
is there a good site that offors good social/event ideas... and details about organizing them? we are a new colony, and we want to do brand new-never been done things on campus.. but we are having trouble figuring out where to start...
|
Let's see.......
AEPhi did Night at the Improv, with college-based improv troupes. After I graduated, they switched to AEPhi Live, a takeoff of SNL. Now they do Phi Cup, which is a hockey competition. They also do a spaghetti dinner every fall. Alpha Phi used to do the Gong Show. Later they switched to Alpha Phlea Market. AXO did a lip sync contest. Sigma Kappa did a talent show. Theta did a casino night. Phi Kappa Sigma did Skuffle, a Halloween party held in alternate years. A few years back it was shut down for building code violations, so they may have discontinued it. AEPi hosts a break-fast after Yom Kippur and a Passover seder. Can't think of anything else offhand... |
ADPi: Playdays (kickball tournament for Ronald McDonald House), Lion Hunt, black diamond formal, casino crush
Apha Chi: Mr. Alpha Chi contest, tailgate, foam crush Tri Delt: Bears at Bat, Christmas in Salado Chi Omega: Chili Cookoff, Christmas in Salado, Chi O Coffee, Pearls and Diamonds formal PiPhi: Howdy Dance (welcome week dance), Firedance, Monmouth Kappa Delta: SHamrock (softball tourney), Zeta: Greek Treat Theta: Theta Taters, Theta Olympics, black and gold formal Kappa: Baylor Beauties, Monmouth |
my brother goes to Bethany, and apparently the Phi Mu's did "Bouncing for Boobs" or something like that, where they bounced on those hop-a-long balls for a certain amount of time to raise $$ for breast cancer research. I thought that was great.
|
We have Greek Week, including Lip Sync and Stepshow. They're always a huge deal!
As far as parties go, though... Sigma Pi: Wetter the Better Phi Lambda Chi: Toga / Blacklight Sigma Tau Gamma: Tahiti Sweetie / Disco Christmas |
Here are some programs at our school
Kappa Delta: Wingo (Bingo and all you can eat buffalo wings with wing eating contest) Tri Delta: Valpo at Bat and Teeter Totter a thon Chi Omega: 3 on 3 basketball Pi Phi: something with pies.. i forgot the cute name they used Gamma Phi Beta: Mr. Valpo Sigma Chi: Derby Days Sig Eps: Sports Week Phi Psi: Phi Psi 500 (week of different games a party at the end) LXA: Watermelon eating contest Sig Pi: Tighty Whities contest (volleyball tournament) There are also random parties throughout, A big hit every year is Sigma Tau Gamma's Darkside where there's just blacklights and they hand out highlighters and people write on each other. Always a good time :) |
sororities:
Pi Phi: Mr. Pi Phi and Arrowspike Chi O: i think they do a walk or something Kappa: they used to do an annual Battle of the Bands, but this year they started "BBQ for Books" A Phi: 3 on 3 Basketball tournament, cardiac care week and a golf tournament zeta: think pink week LTA: Fashion Show fraternities: sigma chi: fight night and derby days delta sig: they have a huge halloween party every year ZTA and Sigma Nu do/did a Jumpathon there were a lot of new things this year that i think are going to be annual events: ADPi - Pool tournament, Play Days kickball tournament, Casino Night ATO and ZTA "Tau Ball" Dodge ball tournament |
At West Virginia University..
-Alpha Phi does King of Hearts (male beauty pageant) -Alpha Xi Delta does Ultimate Frisbee -Delta Gamma does Anchor Bowl (frats play football against each other) -Kappa Kappa Gamma I think does some kind of mini golf thing ..I'm not sure what the other sororities (Pi Phi, Sigma Kappa, AOPi, and Chi O do) -Beta Theta Pi and KA do a karaoke thing -Phi Psi does volleyball -Phi Sigma Kappa does "fantasia" which I'm not sure is the same thing every year, but last year is was all the sororites playing basketball together -Delta Tau Delta does the Delt Bowl (sororities play football against eachother, girls get VERY into it) -Sigma Chi does Derby Days (biggest philanthropy, Sigma Chi throws a HUGE party at the end of the week in a huge field about 30 minutes from school, just a day long drinking fest and bands come and play) ..That's all I know for the frats, there's like 10 philanthropies I don't know about. |
As of this year, these are some of the big philanthropy events:
Alpha Phi- Singled Out Alpha Xi Delta- Xi Man Pageant Delta Gamma- Anchor Splash Delta Zeta- Lip Sync Sigma Sigma Sigma- Pins for Page Bowling Tournament Chi Omega- Flag Football Faternity Events- **Note: We have 22 IFC groups and some of them aren't the most philanthropic groups on campus, unfortunately. So some aren't listed b/c they haven't had one in at least a year. ** Alpha Epsilon Pi- Matzah Bowl Bowling Tournament Sigma Chi- Derby Days Delta Tau Delta- "Week to Be Delt With" (similar to Derby Days) Phi Delta Theta- "Spike Out Cancer" Volleybal Tournament Alpha Tau Omega- Miss Kent State pageant Sigma Nu- Charity Bowl Football Tournament Lambda Chi Alpha- "Chops" Auction, Watermelon Bust Sigma Phi Epsilon- Sig Ep Slam BBall Tournament |
At GMU
We (Phi Sigma Kappa) do Dance for the Cure in conjuction with Alpha Phi Alpha. It's an on-campus dance to raise money for prostate cancer research. As far as parties go, we do Mardi Gras in the Spring--it's probably one of the top three or four parties of the year. Sigma Chi of course has Derby Days Pike has Pike-toberfest--a really big party in the fall SigEp and Pike sometimes do a big pig roast together at the end of the year can't think of what the other six do as far as sororities go, Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Xi Delta both do football tournaments, Alpha Phi does a dodgeball or basketball tournament, ZTA does Big Man on Campus...not sure what Chi O and AOPi do that's really big--they do about a million smaller things each though |
