Greek Life and music

im gonna be a freshman in college and i really want to rush, but I really want to pursue music (guitar) and am unsure about the ability to both pledge a fraternity and be a serious guitar player. Any advice on this would help, and I of course understand fraternities are different and may demand different things. Thanks

Elephant Walk 09-11-2008 09:19 PM

Look up Cory Morrow, Django Walker, etc.

1Hand1Heart 09-12-2008 09:58 AM

Actually, a good example would be to check out Josh Kelley (the one who is marrying Katherine Heigel). He's an incredible artist and many people know who he is....he is a member of Kappa Sigma from Ole Miss.

See, it can be done.

SigmaChiGuy 09-12-2008 09:18 PM

Like dude, where are you going to fit in school into that hectic schedule, dude.

Jimmy Buffet is a Kappa Sig, if he can make that crappy ass music, I'm sure you'll be OK.

Pat Green was Farmhouse. I mean, possibilities are limitless. Cory Morrow and Django Walker came about because they played at their fraternity houses and the brothers urged them on.

nate2512 09-12-2008 10:20 PM

Kevin Griffin - Gamma Chapter LSU Kappa Sigma - Better Than Ezra.

For the record, if you don't like Jimmy Buffetts music, you can shove it up your ass.

And what happened to SECDomination?

From what I hear Florida Kappa Sig is very busy studying how they can better impersonate Florida KA. Trying to teach goody-goodies how to pretend you hunt and fish takes up a lot of time.

Page McConnell of the group Pfish was a member of Kappa Alpha Order (fraternity). He was a member of the Beta Lambda Chapter.

You can do almost anything and still be Greek, including playing the guitar actively.

He's even better known for having been in the group Phish.

There were a few guys in my chapter who played in local bands, and, as was noted, there have been a bunch of famous musicians who have been in fraternities.

AMEN!!!

I love jimmy buffet

Croakies n Bows 11-04-2009 01:42 PM

actually jimmy buffett learned to play guitar in the sigma pi house as a pledge, then he failed out because he was playing and not going to class. Then he switched schools and pledged kappa sig

also tracy Lawrence is a sigma pi.

Ghostwriter 11-05-2009 12:48 PM

Wasn't Tim McGraw a Pike from somewhere in the South? But then he isn't much of a guitar player is he? Picks good looking women, though. So see, there is hope even if you are not a "great" guitar player.

Also, I must be one of the few Kappa Sigs that doesn't like Buffett's music.

MysticCat 11-05-2009 02:41 PM

Well, I gotta say that Phi Mu Alpha is definitely one fraternity where there'd be no problem with pursuing musical aspirations. :D

We recently awarded a National Citation to Chicago (the band, not the city). Three of the four founding members were bothers in our DePaul chapter (one served as president). They were also honored with our version of outanding alumni awards. Ruben Studdard is a brother too.

Kenny Chesney was a Lambda Chi, I want to say from East Tennessee State. He mentions it in his song "Keg in the Closet", 'that old guitar taught me how to score, right there on that Lambda Chi porch.'

I love Kenny.

pete yorn is a DU from syracuse.

Let's clear this up re Buffett

For the record, re Buffett, from another thread:
Get over it, guys. When I saw Buffett at the University of Alabama in 1978, someone stuck a Kappa Sig visor on the end of a crutch and handed it to him from the floor. Buffett took it, looked at, said "Man I quit that s--t a long time ago, I'm a GDI!"

Get over it frat rats, Buffett has dis-owned you!

I'm not sure it could get much clearer than that.

I thought he was a member of Phish? :p

From Sigma Phi Epsilon:
Travis Rush (country singer)
Lucas Prata (House Music)
Tim Mahoney (311 Guitarist)

I'm sure there are more, but the two are the only one I could find.

It was the 70s. Being Greek wasn't the "cool" thing to do. I'm sure he pranced about in letters many times in the 1980s and since then.

Being Greek has never been an uncool thing at the University of Alabama where Buffett was flashing his GDI-ness.

Kevin 01-25-2012 07:53 PM

Eli Young Band is a bunch of Sigma Nus from North Texas. Boyd Tinsley, the fiddle player from Dave Matthews is a Sigma Nu...

Hell.. I didn't end up pursuing music as a career, but I played fiddle in a band during part of my college and fraternity tenure. It's all about time budgeting and if you want to do it, you can do it. A couple years ago, half our house was in various bands.

ETA: Dammit.. I replied to a 3-year old thread which was revived by a troll.

My above comments aside, that's just not the case in my part of the world.

The part about the 70s? Or Buffett prancing?

But yeah, I don't know why this asshole revived the thread anyway.

Taking my almost-60-year-old frat boy to see Jimmy next Saturday in Birmingham. Guess that makes me the other character in that statement.

Actually he flunked out of Auburn first, and wound up graduating from Southern Miss. I have no idea about the guitar part.

I think he's reclaimed it. But I have not heard of any big donations to Kappa Sigma so far. Maybe when his son starts college.;)

Oh no, it was uncool at a certain time in the 1970s.

I haven't a clue either; however, I gotta set the record straight! :p
