A Question for the girls on fashion for the guys

I just wanted to know what you girls like and don't like to see guys wearing this year

Do you like the classic college look?
khaki's, polo shirt, birks, nice hair

The hipster look?
Denim jacket, black shoes, funky/spiked like mad hair, polo shirts with collars flipped up

hippy?

Should we fashion ourselves after B.Rep, J.Crew, or A&F?

What look makes you girls say damn basically, because that's how you know something looks good, if someone looks at you and says damn, if they don't...you know it's just mediocre

Anyway girls...fill us guys in

lindsay_iu 08-27-2001 03:58 PM

Really, it just depends on the guy himself. Some styles just won't fly on certain people. Plus, I just have really random taste in guys and their clothing.
The classic college look is pretty good, but lose the sandals. I just do not like sandals on guys.
A funky hip hop style is also cool, but I don't want to see really, really baggy jeans or any sort of head gear other than a baseball hat with this. I'm kinda picky.
A look that you can't really go wrong with is a nice pair of jeans, with a good sweater or hoodie, as long as you're not sloppy.

dzsaigirl 08-27-2001 04:16 PM

First of all, if the look is contrived, it will not work.

Let your style be a reflection of you. What is comfortable? What is appropriate for your lifestyle. For instance, I teach music lessons part time and have to go straight from campus. So the clothes I wear to school and stuff have to be appropriate for that as well. Of course, special outfits for clubbing are needed, but you shouldn't go overboard.

Be classic. It is a waste to purchase anything that will go out of style soon. Think clean lines, classic cuts and colors that you have seen for years. They are good bets.

On a guy, I prefer classic and timeless.

No. 1 fashion rule: Good grooming. Get frequent haircuts, always (unless working out) be freshly showered, cut your fingernails and toenails evenly, shave daily, brush and floss so your breath is impeccably fresh, use chapstick so your lips are soft, wear MODERATE cologne. Most guys overdo the cologne. If you can smell it really well, you are probably wearing way too much. One or two sprays should do you. My recommendation is Curve for men...it drives us girls crazy. In addition to this, may I add that if you smoke, stop. It makes your breath stink, not to mention your car and clothing...yuck...plus it is just not healthy.

If i think of anything else I will post again. I like this thread.

Oh yeah...I would never look at a guy and say "damn". You don't want girls to say that. You want a polite girl who will be confident and walk up and actually tell you that you look nice, and then you can talk to her!!!!!!!!!!

CRMSNTiDEGRL717 08-27-2001 04:22 PM

I think it totally depends on the guy's looks, personality, and confidence level. A guy could be wearing a trash bag for his outfit, it just depends on the attitude that comes along w/ carrying certain things off. IMO, as long as you're confident and happy wearing it, you WILL look DAYUUUUM fine ;) And just the right amount of cockiness, w/o over doing it, will do the trick--- well, atleast for me it does :D

Sunny 08-27-2001 04:50 PM

Wear whatever YOU like...if you're confident and comfortable THAT's the attractive part. In my opinion atleast, there's a million different looks that are great. Living in CA, the uniform around here seems to be a t-shirt, cargo shorts, and reefs. Accessorized with a silver quiksilver watch (or similar style) and short slighty spiky hair, and possible a wood bead or puka shell necklace. Then there's the punk rockish/skater version, with a spiky-er hair, and a slightly tighter shirt, with a wallet chain and skate shoes. Then there's the abercrombie boys, who always look cute, if a little trendy...they tend to be the same guys who wear khakis and button downs. Basically, if you look put together, it'll go. Personally, these are the styles I find attractive, but I have a friend who always flips for the guy in beat up corduroys with longish hair and a pierced nose...but it's not my cup of tea! SO basically, wear what suits you personality...the clothes you choose tend to be an extension of you, so wear what you like and it can reflect your personality....great clothes might attract a girl, but there has to be something great behind them to!!

Fav stores for guys: Structure, any surf shop, urban outfitters and abercrombie....it might be trendy, but there's just something about those abercrombie guys.

And to top it all off- a light splash of CHROME cologne by Azzaro...it's unique and absolutely heavenly...attracts girls like flies, literally. I bought if for my friend, and girls would just come up to him and ask what it was! He loved me for it and now has the entire line.

damasa 08-27-2001 05:06 PM

I like this thread...being that I'm a guy, I'd just like to say a thing or two. I wear what is comfortable, and what feels right or fits my mood. I hate baggy heans, sandals and visors...bah!
Sometimes I will wear khakis w/ a polo, other times a nice pair of jeans with a nice button down shirt, long or short sleeve, and a nice jacket..or something like that, and of course, the belt and the boots have to match..both being black, brown, or whatever color they are..
there...I think I said my words..or something like that... :)

newbie 08-27-2001 07:25 PM

I totally agree with all the above posters! Excellent advice, girls :D. Remember to only wear what you're comfortable in - it's so funny sometiems to see someone trying to look "suuuuuave" in a leather jacket when he just looks like he's trying too hard, lol.

My favorite look though? The classic, polished look that has been mentioned in the above. The SoCal style that Sunny mentioned is also great...though I'm from NorCal.

My personal favorite colognes for guys: Givenchy Pi and Coolwater. MMMMM. But don't drench yourself with it - there's nothing sicker than cologne-overload!

RedHotChiO 08-27-2001 08:03 PM

I have to say that I don't really like guys that spend more time worrying about the way they look more than I do. I'll admit that I spend a fair bit of time obsessing about clothes, so most guys are safe. One time I went out with this one guy who spent the entire date analyzing my outfit. He knew where I had bought everything. So weird! I never pay attention to what is on the guys' side of the store.

ZTAngel 08-27-2001 08:05 PM

Depends on what look the guy can pull off. My pet peeve is when guys try to make themselves look all tough by wearing their pants down to their ankles along with a huge Nautica jacket which their tiny little bodies are practically swimming in and then top off the look with an unshaven face. It doesn't look cool! Most girls will just laugh at you! So, personally, if a guy is dressing for class, I like the A&F look. An A&F shirt with a pair of jeans. That's it! :)

LeslieAGD 08-27-2001 08:28 PM

I agree with ZTAngel...go for the look that suits you and makes you comfortable. Don't try to pull off a look just because you think it's cool. Personally I like everything from an alternative surfer kinda look to preppy chic, but it depends on the guy.

James 08-28-2001 12:55 AM

Do you think muscular guys are cool ladies?

Also do you ladies know any any decent web sites that show examples of cool men's styles, or the styles you like to see on men? You ladies have us at a disadvantage, all your magazines focus on fashion . . . the ones we read don't really tend to mention it.

SigmaChiCard 08-28-2001 01:59 AM

Perhaps my query was a bit too vague

My fashion is quite set in my ways...and I, of course, am only going to wear things that are comfortable, that's why the things I listed were solely super-comfortable things like jeans, chinos, and what-have-you...so, although I guess I wasn't clear, the wear-what-you-will posts do little for me...

newbie, My leather jacket is one of the greatest creations in the world, quite possibly fashioned by the Almighty, Himself!

And I couldn't breath if I were deprived only one of my pairs of Birks, or my J.Crew sandals...much less never wear sandals

I'll throw out my opinions now...I prefer wearing quasi-classical clothes, collars flipped, some variation of jacket, either my suede car coat, jean, or leather jacket...very seldom jeans, chinos, birks, no cap, super-spiked/messy hair, no watch, no undershirt...or chinos, thick-as-shit sweaters, underplaid, cap, clarks

that's just me, and my clarks only if it's snowing, otherwise...sandals. My question in the end, was I wanted to see what styles girls enjoyed...so let further responses reflect this clarification

pbpck 08-28-2001 02:15 AM

Well, folks, I'm a sucker for JCrew and Abercrombie.
A guy with a nice preppy sweater, khakis or dark washed jeans, Reefs and a baseball cap get me every time. Or a long sleeved Hurley shirt. But I dig anything that looks clean cut from surfer to skater to preppy.

The fashion do nots:
- No socks with sandals
- No black athletic shoes
- No Tevas(those strappy ones)
- No cheesy leather jackets
- No light colored jeans

But more than what a person wears is how he carries himself of course!

:)

josh8o 08-28-2001 02:54 AM

This topic kicks!!!
Never have I been able to obtain so many girls opinions on guys fashion in one place without the stress of asking a group of them in person. I fall into a majority of you ladies favorite fashions:
Surfer
A&F
Preppy/College
I do wear sandals a majority of the time (I go to school in SD...). Sorry lindsay_iu, but I know if you met me and noticed how I make them look you would change your opinion.
I do have a question for you ladies. I spend a lot on cologne and have a wide collection of scents. I was going to get one more before I go back to school, but I need some recommendations. I really don't have a lot of time to spend smelling a bunch of them. Oh yeah- Sunny, I do have Chrome, and I know what you are talking about!
Thanks,
Josh

juniorgrrl 08-28-2001 04:04 AM

My guy has the "engineer chic" look. Basically, its whatever you can throw on before you're 7:30 am circuits class.

His style is usually khaki shorts and a tshirt, or jeans and a tshirt. Sometimes he throws on a button-down shirt over the tshirt just for variety.

Its simple, basic, and not prissy at all. I don't know if I could deal with a guy who worried too much about clothes. I kinda enjoy it when he asks for my help ;)

One thing I CANNOT stand on a guy is jean shorts. They irk me to no end - something just looks trashy about them. Same with tank tops on guys. I also dislike jewelry on men. A wedding ring and a watch is all my guy should ever be wearing.

I'll use my boyfriend as an example. :) (who actually happens to be a Kappa Sig....just thought I'd throw that in for you James ;) )
He's big (in a muscular way). But, he's not bodybuilder big. Personally, I think bodybuilders look disgusting. Nothing is grosser than knowing a man is so vain that he must take steroids to boost his self-image. I personally like the look of a man who spends 5 days a week at the gym and watches his diet to get the body he desires. And, yes, you can tell a difference b/w guys who take steroids and guys who are natural. It's in the shape and the way that the muscles are formed. So, my boyfriend is big but not huge. And, he's cut. I think being cut is more important than being big. In my opinion, nothing is sexier than a defined six-pack. :D

James 08-28-2001 03:58 PM

Off Topic

ZTAngel, you didn't even have to say he was a Kappa Sig, once you just described him I would have known . . . ;)

Built, intensely focused, a romantic gentleman, bright and articulate . . . its in the job description:)

LOL. yes, he is definitely all of the above. :)

Sunny 08-28-2001 05:05 PM

ZTAngel, I totally hear you on the six-pack thing!! It's probably my favorite thing on a guy (closely followed by a killer smile, great eyes, and those super strong arms!) My friends say I'm slightly obsessed! The last guy I dated was this adorable blond who did some modeling for abercrombie...he used to walk around without a shirt all the time, and had this amazing stomach. Too bad he eventually turned out to be an a$$hole...oh well. Speaking of muscular guys, if you've got, flaunt it (please!!!) I live by the beach, so boardshorts and flip flops comprimise a perfectly acceptable daily outfit...and trust me...the girls love it! ;)

lindsay_iu 08-28-2001 05:45 PM

Josh...I'll take your word on the sandals, but it would be better if I could actually see them. I guess that the reason why sandals on guys bother me is that most of the guys that I've seen have bad feet, but then again, feet just aren't my thing. hehe. Just keep the feet in good shape, and I'll be fine with it.

Muscles...I don't like skinny guys, but I don't like super-huge guys either. Guys who are toned are cool with me. Nice arms are a turn-on too. Just don't go crazy and try to be a body builder.

I second juniorgrrl about the denim shorts. Ick. Cotton cargo shorts are the way to go.

pbpck, I agree completely with your fashion dont's. No one should be seen in those things, not just guys.

I think that the Abercrombie models look pretty good, both with the style and body type.

But more importantly, the things that I like to see most don't really have to do with the clothes a guy is wearing, unless the outfit is hideously bad. Being well-groomed is very important. Brush your teeth, shave daily, keep your hair nicely cut, take a shower, keep your hands well kept (I notice hands right off the bat). Just be confident and that will shine through.

HeidiHo 08-28-2001 05:54 PM

I prefer the A&F look. My guy has an issue with jeans and won't wear them, so naturally I love to see guys in jeans. I like sweaters in the winter. My opinion on the sandals, as long as the feet are presentable I like guys in 'em. I've grown especially fond of the guys flip flips from A&F & the like. As for hair, I like that sorta geled look, where it's messd up & spikey right in front. I guess I can sum up my entire prefered look by telling you to check out the A&F catalog. Nice bodies, good clothes, groomed well...
Heidi

pbpck 08-28-2001 09:34 PM

Josh8o-

Going to school in SD as well, I totally understand the living in Reefs concept.

As for smells....Honestly, the smell of Old Spice deodorant is amazing. It's that GUY smell. This in combination with the fresh laundry smell of a guy's clothes has a bigger effect on me than colognes. But Curve for men and A&F smells are great. They're really warm scents.

MoxieGrrl 09-18-2001 01:55 PM

Ok, so how does everyone feel about tatoos on guys?

My boyfriend (who is a KA-whoohoo! :D ) has one on the top of each arm. He also has one on the inside of his top arm. The one on his right arm is a design with the Chinese symbol for success, and the one on his right arm is a design with a KA in it. The one on the inside of his right arm is the Chinese symbol for friendship. He has really nice arms (but not bodybuilder like!), so they look hot. I'm not a big fan of tons of tattoos. Especially cartoon-like things. Yuck.

The one thing I *HATE* that college guys (and girls) do is wearing shirts that say "American Eagle", "Abercrombie," etc....
I think that they are majorly tacky. I call them"Billboard shirts." I always thought that if you are going to wear nice clothes, people should be able to recognize them by the style and the cut, not because the name plastered across the front.

As far as men's style goes, it's kind of unrealistic for college guys, but Brian from the Showtime program Queer As Folk has got it going on!! He's very, very classy! Suits, dress pants, tailored looking shirts...mmmmm....

SparkliiQTMTSU 09-18-2001 02:27 PM

About the tattoo's I don't think that they're totally bad as long as they're placed in the proper location. I have never really been one for tattoo's but as long as its not too big and the guy isnt covered in them they aren't too bad.

I do agree about the American Eagle, Abercrombie, Gap etc. shirts. I mean do we really have to have these companies plastered aross our chests?? They are mjorly tacky. You can dress in nice clothes and people will still probably know where the clothes came from w/o having the company printed all over you.

As for the whole style for guys issue, I think they should just wear what makes them comfortable. Their style should be their own.

Nichole

My male fashion pet peeve

Unless you are skiing, don't wear a turtleneck. Especially if you have a double chin or two!

James 09-18-2001 09:38 PM

Re: My male fashion pet peeve

LOL, or t-shirts that are barely large enough to cover your belly? Or pants that show a little to much posterior anatomy?

this saddens me. :(

I get at least 15 girls to compliment me a day I'd say when I wear a turtleneck

DGPhoney 09-25-2001 04:49 PM

Hey All,
Well before I answer the question, the turleneck thing really, I think it depends on the guy. Some guys can wear them and look really nice, some nope.
As for the question at hand. Guy Fashions, if it's a normal typical day then the whole Khakis, Jeans, Polo shirts, Baseball Hat wearing, good clean cut smell(like Ralph Lauren Romance or Tommy H) Smelling good is apart of looking good to :) You know the preppy/sporty college look. I am feeling it fellas, cause it looks goood.
as for the question about muscles, you know being cut is nice, and being fit is nice too, but if you are rippling with soo many muscles that you walk funny, then nahh not cute at all.
But I am sure, if you have a cool personality then what you wear or how you wear it will be suave regardless ;)

No, no, no!

Last year, I was in my room getting ready for a date. About six different sisters had let me raid their closets, and I was putting much thought into what I should wear. The plan was dinner at a pretty nice restaurant, but it was really hot out, so I settled on a skirt and tank top. As I was finishing up, a sister walked into my room and said the following:

"Your date is here...and he is wearing capri pants!"

What was he thinking???

James 09-25-2001 05:24 PM

uhhh . . . is that really bad? Will someone explain why to us fashion challenged individuals? That went right over my head . . .:)
Which is why we posted this thread, cause we might not know what capri pants are or why not to wear them on a date:).

I never seen a guy wearcapri pants that might be scarry . But capri pants james are the type of pants that girls wear that cut above the ankle or a little higher depending on your preference, some calf length some above the ankle.
Hope that helps
