Expansion/Colonizing

Maybe someone who has worked with HQ or know more about this topic can educate me. I noticed that there are quite a few Phi Mu chapters at big named schools, however, it appears that there is an overwhelming amount of chapters at smaller greek schools. Is it a goal of Phi Mu to expand to smaller school/greek systems?

What's in a name...

First, what do you consider a "big name" school?

Second, what do you have against "smaller" greek schools? Didn't you graduate from Albion? You should be excited we go to as many campuses as we possibly can.

Third, we do need to expand more up North and out West-as opposed to worrying about "big name"...so, I'm curious...what do you think are some of the more prominent schools that have Phi Mu chapters?

BabyPiNK_FL 09-01-2008 12:28 PM

I think she was just wondering in general. I didn't notice any criticizing on particularly negative views in her post.

Yikes! It was simply just a general question. I'm just a little scared to ask any more questions. Albion? Where's that? I didn't graduate from Albion. lol. Where did you get that from? I went to the Univ. of Florida!

1Hand1Heart 09-02-2008 11:07 AM

Schools we should consider...

Sorry, I had you mixed up with someone else from that school. No, I was asking what is seen as a big school? I graduated from a Big Ten University and I was wondering if you considered that a big school because it isn't in the SEC.

If you ask me, we need to expand to fill out the entire SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC. I'm not sure what they are called in the West (I don't get into sports-that's for my boyfriend) but, we def. need more up north and out west.

I also think we need some Ivy League universities under our belt, as well. We only have one Patriot League University (American University).

I also think we should consider Greene's "Public Ivies" (such as U of F and Penn State) and try to expand at some of the other schools, like Rutgers.

Kansas City 09-02-2008 11:35 AM

I don't see any problem with looking at expanding to smaller schools. Although the "Bigger" schools tend to have "Bigger" Greek life, there are numerous smaller universities that have just as active of a Greek life scene. I'm particularly happy with the colonization of Grand Valley State - (D2 in Michigan). Although I am proud of Phi Mu being rooted in the south, I'd like to see a bit more diversity and consideration of the smaller schools, particularly an expansion to the north and west.

PhiMu_Lindz 09-04-2008 02:00 PM

yay patriot league :) we used to have a chapter at Bucknell too (which is also patriot league) but i'm not sure how long ago it was closed.

PhiMuPride 09-04-2008 03:17 PM

Congrats and best wishes to the newly recolonized Gamma Lambda chapter at University of North Carolina for participating in their first formal recruitment this week!

Also, best wishes to Theta Kappa colony at Huntingdon College for taking part in their formal recruitment!

Large schools...medium schools....small schools...We are doing just fine!!

BabyPiNK_FL 09-26-2008 05:22 PM

Some of my chapter sisters just finished attending Lynn's bid day!
So far there are 50 amazing new Phis!

Congrats to my Theta Lambda Girls!

I can't wait for pictures to see if any of the women I met made it in and I will be sure to pass them along so my sisters can have a peek! Yay for a new Phi Mu beginning!

Phi_Mu_DK_2008 09-26-2008 08:23 PM

I wish they would open the chapter back up at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, I'm looking to go there for law school and it'd be nice to have a chapter there!!

PhiMuPride 09-27-2008 11:18 AM

AWESOME news about Lynn University!!

ladybug12 09-30-2008 02:12 PM

Yes, what great news about Lynn!!!

To address the origional question of this thread, extension is sort of like recruitment...a mutual selection process between an NPC sorority and the Greek System on a particular campus.

There are lots of rapidly-growing Greek systems at "Big Schools" (no matter where they are located or what conference) who are looking to open up for extensnion. But, Phi Mu has to take into account things like: is there a house in reasonable shape that can be rented (we surely can't run out and build a house), alumnae support (a must in order to have an advisory council), and of course...money. The financial support that a colony requires in HQ staff, national and area officers, and then a CC or graduate counselor is staggering.

Heard that we are going to present at Clemson later this year. I would definately call that a "Big School".

PhiMuPride 09-30-2008 02:56 PM

Ladybug12, How certain are you about Clemson? Exploratory visits did not take place yet.

Kansas City 09-30-2008 04:03 PM

I heard the Clemson rumor too ... I believe in another GC thread. I don't know how accurate it is but it is an interesting rumor anyway.

irishpipes 09-30-2008 05:44 PM

Clemson is open, but groups haven't been selected yet to present.

ladybug12 09-30-2008 08:55 PM

I stand corrected. Poor choice of words...:o

I should have said that Phi Mu is going to apply to present for extension at Clemson. I do have this from a reliable source. We were one of the groups chosen to present in 2004, I believe...so hopefully we will get a chance to do so again.

I will brag about Gamma Lambda at UNC Chapel Hill. The chapter recolonized last fall and had a wonderful recruitment this year. They are off to a great start!

Yes, Phi Mu, AOII, and DZ presented last time, with DZ being selected.

LyonLuv 10-01-2008 05:09 PM

California!

We're presenting at UC Irvine! I'm so excited! This will be our 2nd chapter in CA...the rest have closed =(

BabyPiNK_FL 10-01-2008 11:45 PM

A) Another chapter in CA would be amazing! Who else is presenting though?

B) Update on Lynn University-We now have 61 amazing Phis and are the largest sorority (out of 2) on campus!

libelle 10-03-2008 06:16 PM

It's great that we have been chosen to present at so many great schools. Hopefully we will wow them with our recent colonization successes :-)

BabyPiNK_FL 10-03-2008 06:23 PM

From what I heard about the presentation at Lynn last spring, it'd be hard for any school to resist! ;)

That's soo awesome! I plan on visiting Lynn U sometime before the end of the year! :)

libelle 11-10-2008 09:34 PM

It looks like we are expanding in IL too. A local sorority at Elmhurst College chose to affiliate with Phi Mu!

BabyPiNK_FL 11-11-2008 02:26 AM

How exciting! What is the local sorority's name?

Sigma Kappa and Kappa Delta also presented. The selection is set to be made sometime tomorrow. I was at the Sigma Kappa presentation but not the other's. I didn't find out until after the fact that the presentations were open.

I know Sigma Kappa is also presenting at Clemson. Not sure who the 3rd group is.

als463 11-19-2008 12:18 PM

Apparently (by looking through other threads) Sigma Kappa was asked to colonize at UC Irvine. Let's at least cross our fingers on Clemson.

jaymugirly 11-19-2008 02:05 PM

Has anyone heard news about Clemson yet? Alpha Phi was also a group who presented last week.

CougarGrad 11-21-2008 08:44 AM

Allow me to jump in and answer- it's posted on the Alpha Phi board here, and I believe in Sorority Recruitment also, that Sigma Kappa was chosen to colonize at Clemson.

GC2theEC 11-23-2008 05:36 PM

Hey guys, I'm one of the new Phi's from the colony over at Elmhurst College. I'm being a nerd and researching everything; so, I'd figure I'd say hello! I was part of the local sorority, Gamma Chi, and after the NPCs came to present, it was a unanimous decision (alumnae votes included) to affiliate with Phi Mu. We're so excited! They had a new member ceremony for the Gamma Chi's this past Friday and we'll start recruiting when we come back for spring semester in February.

BabyPiNK_FL 11-24-2008 12:51 AM

YAY!

Let me be the first to welcome you to the Phamily! Phi Mu has been such an important part of my life for the past 3 years, and I hope that it will be a major part of your as well. You picked the right one, baby!

mh*e 11-24-2008 07:53 PM

Welcome to this amazing sisterhood, GC!!! Keep us posted with everything! :)

beccaminister 01-29-2009 06:38 PM

GC...welcome to Phi Mu! I'm one of the Alumnae that was there at the reception/training day. Looking forward to seeing more of the chapter and of each of you. Congrats and good luck as recruitment begins monday.

We don't have to have a house. My chapter (Lambda Gamma - Virginia Commonwealth University) didn't have one.

I really think it's more focused on if they get invited by the school to present or not. I think we'd take just about any invitation we were offered because there are Phi Mu quality girls in every city. :)

SnarlingSway 02-04-2009 02:29 PM

My friend is looking to start a Phi Mu chapter at her school, Iona College. I was wondering if anyone could give me some info on how she goes about doing that?

Iona College is actually open for NPC extension. Your friend should go and speak with the Assistant Director of Student Development to learn more about the process.

libelle 02-08-2009 05:22 PM

A chapter at Iona would be great. We have a lot of alumnae in NYC and Long Island.

GC2theEC 02-14-2009 11:38 AM

Hey everyone! The rho theta colony at Elmhurst just finished their recruitment and it was a huge success! Numbers are still floating around (nationals has not yet told the Phi's how much we received). But, we had bid day yesterday and our girls have reported 72, which surpasses total of 65. Phi Mu did a wonderful job!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 02-14-2009 01:06 PM

Congratulations!
