Nasty rumors you've heard about yourself (in real life)

I heard that I was having an affair with my coworker's husband.

That rumor really did hurt my friendship with the wife but not the husband. He and I found it absurd and rather funny. She went on the warpath. It really showed how insecure and somewhat homophobic she really was.

Still, I thought it was pretty cool that the general public felt I had husband-stealing potential.

AlphaFrog 08-28-2008 07:30 PM

I went out on a date with a coworker behind my then-fiance's back. Too bad the then-fiance was there. If I was going to go on a date with another guy, I don't think I'd bring the guy I was engaged to along.

SWTXBelle 08-28-2008 07:53 PM

In high school, I was supposedly "a witch".

Jimmy Choo 08-28-2008 07:59 PM

That b/c I had a great relationship with one guy I used to work with that means I'm sleeping with him behind my then-boyfriends back. After he moved it was rumored I was sleeping with another guy at work. If it wasn't so awful I would laugh. Both of these guys are under 25 and I'm well in my 30's....I should be flattered that the person who started that rumor thinks I'm that much of a cougar!

AKA_Monet 08-28-2008 08:04 PM

Back when my husband and I were newlyweds, during those long hot summer nights, our neighbors thought it was us making all that noise from the bedroom when it turned out to be our next door neighbor who was a young single mother (daughter grown and out the house) getting busy with the latest fling... I thought that was funny when I heard it.

Dionysus 08-28-2008 08:18 PM

In fifth grade, some ho wrote a rumor in a bathroom stall that I was gay, everyone believed it. We were at the age when we just started to understand the concept of homosexuality. Apparently I fitted the "profile".

There's some truth in the rumor TODAY, but back then my world revolved around Nintendo, blue raspberry blowpops, and Guess! jeans...NOT getting with a girl.

EE-BO 08-28-2008 09:07 PM

I found out recently that some people on GC don't think I am fratty at all.

Devastating.

Scandia 08-28-2008 09:37 PM

Some guy said that I had gone to some club (that I was NOT allowed to go to at the time- I was living at home and the folks were strict) and had told him and his buddies that I was dating a friend of mine and that his best buddy was a "bad influence". And since my friend had no reason to mistrust the guy, and he had never introduced us, foolishly believed him and was furious at me.

But I had an alibi- another friend of mine was that night at that club and confirmed that I was NOT there. PLUS that dude had asked this friend earlier what I looked like and was like- so when he told the first friend that I had gone there, he was able to describe me to a T.

The angry friend could tell that my version remained consistent, while the other dude's was not consistent.

So I convinced my mom to let me go to this club with a group of girlfriends a night where all the previous people involved would be there. And the angry friend could tell that the slanderous guy did not recognize me, nor did I recognize him- nor did I know my way around the club at all, which was further proof of my innocence.

My friend apologized and bought me lunch.

tld221 08-28-2008 10:08 PM

ive always gotten the bad rep amongst my friends' parents that i was the "bad influence." hmm. i didnt sleep with every guy on the basketball team, hook up with dudes in the locker room, or drink/smoke/do drugs. but i sure did graduate at the top of my class and go to college.

damn me and my rebellious ways.

now, the word on the street is that im just a mean b!tch. theyre hitting home with that one, because that's somewhat true. but when it comes down to it, i wouldnt bust a grape in a food fight.

and there are people who are putting $ on the day i come out. and when i say "people," i mean "family."

OneTimeSBX 08-28-2008 10:12 PM

when i was 16, i supposedly got pregnant by the preachers son, and thats why we had left/switched congregations...lord i was so in love with that boy! but his daddy was a money obsessed crook. THATS why we left!

come to find out another girl actually was pregnant by him...and once it got out she got her a** whooped in a sunday school class by another girl he was sleeping with. what a bullet i dodged not messing with him...

FlaGirl07 08-28-2008 10:21 PM

Someone told my boyfriend that i made out with some guy at a frat bar for free drinks recently. Too bad school consumed my life all summer and i haven't been out in forever. Free drinks would be nice though!

My parents like to take vacations, so in 12th grade when my mom and stepdad went to Mexico for a week, I stayed home from school and went with them (my grades were good enough that they didn't care). Then I went to LA to see my dad for Christmas and came back with 2 Coach bags.

In reality, I'm not rich, but my family works hard so we got to take an extra vacation that year. I only get to go to LA because my dad is there (reminder: everyone in my HS is from OH, so LA = rich people to them because they've never been there). And really, I only got 2 Coach bags that year because my birthday & Christmas are in the same month and I turned 16.

A couple of my friends wanted to go to LA with me, but their parents said no (for whatever reason). So I guess they were mad about it and over Christmas they started talking to other people about me and how "snobby" I was.

After Christmas, a rumor had started that I was "totally rich because my Dad is a big drug dealer."

This was a really hurtful rumor, that even got me called down to the counselor who was "concerned about my family being involved in illegal activities." It even got back tomy mom (via some other kid's parents hearing it). It was pretty embarrassing.

The rumor eventually died down, but I haven't talked to those girls since.

Yep. They thought I'd cast a spell on them . . .

KSUViolet06 08-28-2008 10:51 PM

Another good one that was going around the hometown crowd my sophomore year of college:

I joined a sorority so now I go out and get coked up all the time, which proves that I am truly the snob they thought I was.

I about died when someone told me that because I'd been out of HS for 2 years and could not believe the same people were still talking about me.

epchick 08-29-2008 12:14 AM

There were a few.

Apparently, I was a sex fiend. That all I would talk about to people is how I get it on, with who and where. I would supposedly go down to the end of the school block w/ my geeky friend (who...ewwwwww i would never like in a million years) and we would makeout and have sex. These girls that started the rumor I knew from elementary school but I never talked to.

When I was in 4th grade, some boy used to call me a prostitute. He spread it around w/ his friends. All I remember was thinking "hell yeah I wanna be a prostitute. They make good money. Stupid boy doesn't even know what a prostitute is, he should check the dictionary." Apparently, I was the one who didn't know what a prostitute was. A prostitute is NOT a prosecutor (which is what I wanted to be "when i grew up") lol.

Of course I was called a bitch, but I am one. So that's not necessarily a rumor. lol

In high school, I was told by a football player that I was "the ugliest girl he's ever seen" which really hurt. What's worse is that my friends did nothing to comfort me, they just laughed and changed the subject. That still affects my confidence, though.

KatieKate1244 08-29-2008 12:17 AM

From Middle School/Early High School: I supposedly was one of the most powerful voodoo priestesses in the state.

From High School: That I had had multiple abortions. I went to Catholic HS and walked out of class (several times, actually) because I didn't agree with the way my theology teacher was presenting the anti-abortion section.

OneTimeSBX 08-29-2008 12:19 AM

oh i forgot one...i had my boobs done...and i went "too big" lol!

ummm no. i had just had a baby. and i was nursing her so hell yeah, they were were huge!

Scully 08-29-2008 12:12 PM

Junior year, a GDI told my sisters that I had slept with him. Ummm, no.

KSigkid 08-29-2008 12:17 PM

That I was a Red Sox fan - a bunch of my law school friends assumed as much because of my living in Boston, and my growing up in a Connecticut town that is mostly pro-Sox.

Luckily, I've been able to stop that disgusting rumor.

Whew! Good thing you were able to get that under control!

Elementary School - We had try outs for the high school dance department. None of the popular girls got in. I did. They started the rumor that I only got in because my older sister was in the department and was an out-going Senior. They never did come up with a reason why I got in my Sophomore, Junior and Senior years too.

College - I went out once with this guy Robert. About a week later he's at this bar near campus talking to the bartender (my HUGE crush) and some other guys and he tells them I'm his girlfriend. No, no! It was ONE date! And you smoked menthol cigarettes. ick!

In high school, one of my best friends (who is black) was with me at lunch and went to get something in the cafeteria. He spoke to a black girl for a minute and came back. Then he told me that the girl asked why he hung out with me because "I don't like black people."

Um...I am black. Several of my best friends/beloved little ones are black or black hispanic. My ENTIRE family is black (unless you want to take it back to slavery times or the alleged "Indian" times).

Just because I dressed up for school spirit "celebrity day" as Britney Spears (cos I had a plaid school girl skirt handy) and didn't stand with you in the space next to the cafeteria they had to PAINT YELLOW and put a sign that said you can not stand in the space painted yellow (because that is where all the fights happened and strangely enough was were 99.99% of black students would stand during lunch on any given day-no joke) does not mean that I hate myself or any other black person. And just because you're black doesn't mean we're obligated to be BFF for life or vice versa. I judge on content of character-and the constant willingness to fight and/or match head to toe in lime green (or whatever the color of the day was), or to start the famous "Jamaicans vs. Haitians School War" are not ideal friend characteristics for me.

When my parents got divorced and my mom moved out we didn't have a lot of money because my dad worked as a landscaper. And, frankly, he wasn't that nice to us. Either way, my sister and I wore a lot of hand-me-downs and honestly, really looked a mess the whole time. We were smart kids, but didn't have a lot of cooth because we had basically been raising ourselves and staying at home alone since the fourth grade. (My parents got divorced in 7th grade but our home situation wasn't great when they were married either.) So, because of our lack of cool clothes, et al we were always the subject of nasty rumors. At one point, it was rumored that we were having a three-some with my best friend from elem school. I'm trying to paint the picture of two bright girls who always go to school and have their homework done but may sometimes be inappropriate and look un-kept. Obviously, it wasn't our fault our home life was crap and we had no one to teach us how to be polite.

My eighth grade math teacher had a son a year older than us, a son a few years younger, and her husband was the principal of the high school we were about to go to. (I'll never forget this and maybe it doesn't really count as a rumor.) We were at a baseball game one afternoon because going to games and such kept us from having to go home. We were talking to the math teacher's younger son and she called him over to her chair. From where we were, we could hear her telling him not to talk to us.

It kills me that she thought we were going to corrupt her precious little son. It amazes me that WE were going to corrupt her son, but the basketball star son only survived one year at NC State before dropping out to work on Mommy's farm.

Me & Steph were able to overcome our situation and are now both about to graduate with degrees (she in december and me in may). Steph has been an active member and successful officer of Alpha Gam and I am currently holding my 2nd office in SAI, have an office in Phi Sig, am a manager at my job, got a scholarship, was awarded a prestigious internship with NC State Gov't and recently got Dean's list. Sometimes, I really just want to let that math teacher know that we could hear her and make sure she knows how successful I have been here at school.

During my senior prom, I was on "too many drugs" and that was why I was throwing up in the bathroom. Never mind that I had a nasty stomach bug, and had dropped nearly 10lbs because I couldn't stop throwing up everything for 2 days before hand.

BetteDavisEyes 08-30-2008 10:48 AM

There was a rumor during my sophomore year of high school that I beat up this guy at a party. The truth was that I was walking down the street and saw him fall off his skateboard, crash into his moms car and fall to the pavement hard. I ran to help him but the moron who started the rumor just saw me running thus ASSuming I was the culprit. Since then, everyone at school thought I was a bad ass and didn't bother me.
Even better was that at our 10 year reunion last year, they did a before/after slide of us and what people thought you were going to turn out to be. Most of my high school peers voted they thought I would be a corrections officer or bounty hunter. They were shocked to find out I was a kindergarten teacher. :p

jrleaguer 08-30-2008 01:26 PM

I get really bad migraines and have very specific migraine medication (Imitrex) when I get attacks. My MIL was staying with us for a month or so when she was sick and I was taking care of her. When she moved out she told my SIL that I was on "heavy, powerful drugs" and I still think they don't believe me, thinking it must have been painkillers or whatever. I never knew why she said that because no one would know when you take Imitrex -- you don't get tired, excited, or anything else. I suppose she was reacting to the way I looked when I had a severe migraine or what I did (retreated to a dark room and tried to sleep).

My MIL always talks badly about the other person when they're not there, so I was the victim then. When she visits now, she talks badly about my SIL. I never respond because I assume she talks that way about us when we're not there.

CarolinaCutie 08-30-2008 11:25 PM

Well, I don't think this falls under the category of "nasty" rumor, but it's pretty random.

A few months ago, I parked my car in a parking lot across the street from my neighborhood bar, and attempted to cross the street. Except I got hit by a car. I was fine, it was super embarrassing (and NOT my fault!) and it was pretty much the talk of the town (well, of the bar patrons, at least) for a couple weeks.

Around this time I heard the rumor that I was wasted and that I had a cup of beer in my hand, and when I got hit by the car, that my beer did not even spill. WTF? Who makes something like that up? For the record, I was completely sober, considering I was DRIVING, and I didn't have a beer in my hand because I had just gotten out of the CAR. Gah!

(Oh, and the person who told me that he had heard this rumor was completely serious, and seemed to think that the person who passed it on to him was being serious as well)
